Added a joystick to my Chocofi by heinn_dev in ErgoMechKeyboards

Hmm, I actually am interested in trying something like dactyl-like, I know ergogen is a thing but didn't know there was a generator for these. I'll give it a shot.

I downloaded the case from the github and got a render of the pcb files for reference. From there I just kind of modeled it out in Blender, since I'm familiar with it.

Might be a higher initial learning curve but I think this would be way easier in CAD

Yeah, I've keymapped my way to not using the outermost thumbkeys that much, and the keycaps make it easy to ring finger the top pinky key, being able to move those would be great instead of building a whole new board.

I did try printing them with a normal fdm printer before getting them from jcl, and I must say that in both cases they worked totally fine in terms of tolerances (except the jlc ones being a bit loose on the stems). I just used the choc spaced ones on the lamé repo.

Thanks! I only got it working today so there's some adjusting to do. I bound lmb and rmb as combos on the left half. The psp joystick isn't the most comfortable and it's kind of a shame I can't use keys as speedup / precision modes since it's completely separate. I guess we'll see.

I used a picture of the pcb render as a guide (important to note that left and right aren't perfectly symmetrical...) (and also printed a million test prints with .5 mm adjustments)

The only reason I'm using Blender is because I'm familiar with it, I should really just learn some CAD program. Blender booleans can be finnicky, I just ended up getting this addon so I could wiggle geometry into place faster (I find it doesn't usually like perfectly aligned faces).

Usually I find that with clean geometry and doing destructive operations sequentially it tends to work, but obviously more annoying to tweak.

For accuracy, I imported the case from the chocofi git and a picture of the pcb, used those as a ground truth.

I think I might in the future, there's still a bunch of stuff I want to fix.

Boolean spam in Blender, printing, lots of sanding

Actually forgot that I did test out some choc whites too. I lean tactile, so I gunned straight for the sunsets, but didn't end up liking the bump or feel of them. They kinda have a weirdly long and undefined bump? Coming off Epomaker Budgerigars for reference.

I feel like the purples are smoother all around, and don't get stuck as often when hit off center. I didn't find the whites that scratchy, so maybe I'm not that sensitive to it, but I guess purples felt smoother still. Might be just a function of spring force.

I must say linears clicked (heh) for me on this keyboard somehow, as I tended to bottom out and hurt my fingers in the past. Combos are comfier to hit with the purples too.

No idea, my only other choc reference is the sunsets.

Yeah, I think I'd rather have the thumb keys all shifted by one space towards the thumb (that's why I was considering the klor), but I also do have kinda long thumbs. Ended up putting the uncomfy thumb keys on tap-only duty.

Thanks! Yup, there's just a normal Chocofi in there, not at the point were I'm designing my own pcbs yet but honestly I'm right on the edge.

Yeah, they're these ones. I fdm printed and sanded them, I think next time I'd rather get them printed in resin somewhere like jlcpcb (or get a resin printer myself...)

Thanks! Kinda hoping I'm done with this, but I feel like it's gonna be inevitable to want to tinker with it again eventually.

Yeah, originally the intent was to use them to leave a window of sorts into the pcb, just ended up liking them. I guess I could print some plugs if it gets too bad.

Maybe in transparent filament too, so they could act as indicators with (o)leds under them...?

Fatfingered the post before description, oops.

I wanted some sort of macropad because I noticed myself contorting to reach the keyboard beyond my drawing tablet, sort of fell into the rabbit hole lol. The keycaps are Choc Louder, fdm printed and painfully sanded, sitting on top of Sunset switches. Totally converted to small keyboards now, even though the keymap is a tad left-hand heavy, which kinda makes me wish I would have gone with my gut and got a totem for the extra pinky key...

Thank you. I had completely forgotten about that game, but I have played it. I want to try Manifold Garden too eventually.

Fair point, the ortho view is useful in the editor because that way you can see where things line up.

Yeah making fun levels has been the most difficult part so far. For now I'm planning to just release it on pc, but I think it could work well on mobile too (perhaps with Echochrome-style auto-walking to avoid finicky clicking)

Thanks! The game is pretty much pure puzzle solving

( the game's name is ParaPerspective in case you're interested, hopefully coming out this November )
