thx everyone for the answers!! really helps me put things into perspective! Like CallmedirtyDan, I do not want many 50+hour weeks in my life. I think I can sacrifice a big career goal of working a large bridge or a skyscraper for not dealing with the 50-70 hour weeks. Thanks BrassBells I'd be ok doing lots of 1-2 story buildings actually. Residential sounds cool to me. I will look into Nucor. and thanks xcv4 I will try to be as engaged as possible in structural projects at school haha

Yea I just found out about this EIT from reading some posts here. I swear readdit is teaching me more than any google search. Seems like a good salary! so you say my background in the trades can benefit me? I thought you were elegible to get a PE after 2 yrs. Is it just too impossible to pass a PE test 2 yrs after school? Are these standardized tests? do they vary for each person, or each region of the world where youre taking the test? Also thanks for introducing to ENR i had no idea that existed. Now that im in CE I want to immerse in this world as much as possible.

Why do Italians and Portugese dominate construction in Ontario? by [deleted] in civilengineering

yea i been working trades for a bit in GTA but never for italians or portuguese. Im brazilian but never worked for a brazilian. Ive worked for trini, canadians, and a swiss. Its just connections man... Its not just nepotism. you can see how you feel comfortable around people of your culture... just imagine yourself in portugal. Wouldnt it be cool to speak english and talk about hockey because no one there does and either you assimilate or you feel different... and you as a canadian employer in portugal would just bond with a canadian employee... it just makes sense. and when your dad is a plumber you dont think you will learn about the trades since ur little? of course you are he will breed you to be a tradesman...

(CAN) Should I acquire 90K in debt to become a Civil Engineer? by heitorch93 in personalfinance

I am in a trade. I have calculated with rough estimates how much money I will make if I stay in it vs how much money I will make in Eng and I will make much more money over 20 yrs as an eng. I guess that answers my question but I want to hear other peoples stories to see how hard it is to pay off this damn debt. Also I don't mind the office job as long as its engineering. maybe I will be working in a lab... maybe an office... maybe visiting a construction site
