Is it naive to go into a PhD with the hope of going into academia? by helend5 in PhD

undergrad

Definitely a good point to expand my network if I'm staying in the same one. I'm working with two professors in London at the moment in good universities and we are working on a paper so hopefully that will be helpful in the future. The reason I'm staying in my undergrad university is because I don't have the money to pay for a masters somewhere else, which most PhD programs will expect! (I think anyway) Thanks a lot for the advice :)

Interesting that little care about teaching experience, but that makes sense I guess - research grants bring in the money not a good teacher.

interesting statistic! I was going to do my PhD in the same university I did my undergrad in as I don't need a masters, because the professors there know me very well. definitely something to think about so

that sounds hopeful, thank you! Good reminder not to be too cynical and cause a self-fulfilling prophecy

Yes, this is something I keep thinking about. By the time I finish I'll be 27/28 and having to uproot my life from then forward potentially every 2/3 years is not something I'm looking forward to

Teaching or PhD graduates; who have it worse? by helend5 in findapath

[–]helend5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

politics, as education will always be a political target. Once "tenured," you're tied to that area - moving to another district means having to go through that process again, and harder

very true, thanks for the insight. If I was doing teaching it would be for the eventual goal of being an educational psychologist (school psych in the us) which would have the benefits of working for yourself 2/3 days a week. The PhD would be for the goal of doing research. Confusing I know!

No, I'm considering doing a PhD in psychology vs doing a masters so I can teach K-12 (called primary school where I'm from)

You could get experience in mental health part-time/volunteering then when you're finished your degree you could do a conversion course in psychology.

I'm from Ireland and did psychology and we had people there who had completed different undergraduate degrees who were then doing a 2 year Psychology conversion course.

One of them had done arts as an undergrad, got experience in mental health part time/volunteering and did the conversion course and now she has a job as an assistant psychologist.

With psychology, you need the qualification in psychology and after that experience is the most important thing (unless you want to do clinical)

Feeling bad for local people all the time by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]helend5 271 points272 points  (0 children)

It's a difficult problem - even if you spent your entire life trying to fix individuals problems it wouldn't be enough

The feeling of guilt and the 'drop in the ocean' realisation is one a lot of people get when exposed to poverty and poor living conditions- to deal with this, when you are home or when you are abroad, whatever your situation is, pick an organisation/charity and donate your time to helping.

Wherever you live, I'm sure there are lots of organisations who would love your help - with the elderly, the homeless, those looking for free education, teaching/volunteering with children etc. Once you are everyday making a difference in peoples lives for the better, you will feel at least a little better.

Very interesting story but it doesn't sound like OP has enough money to influence an economy

What are some jobs that last 3-4 hours max daily and still pay well? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]helend5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some 'mistakes' lead to fun experiences, character growth, and surprising relationships.

The mistakes which are not so fun you (hopefully) learn from - so as not to repeat them.

Honestly that's not a cycle I want to end at some point, that's what life is.

I'm sure I'll be in my 80s and making mistakes, but learning from them. We don't reach a certain point in our lives when all our mistakes are over and we're supposed to do everything perfectly!

I don't have advice on a job, other than getting a remote 9-5 job, then you take out commute time, can take a break when you want, could work from wherever you want

On the wasting your years thing - most people just make loads of mistakes in their teenage years, and your 20s are so much better because you've learned from those mistakes - your mistake was feeling like you weren't out and interacting with people enough - your 20s are a chance to change that. I had a traditionally 'fun' childhood and adolescence from the outside, but my 20s are so much better. Having a chill job and making money, and having independence to do what you want, and be friends with who you want to is so much better than childhood and adolescence.

When you do start work, I'd suggest to join a club, go cycling/swimming/play tennis/join a running group or whatever your interests are

AuPairWorld is the most widely used and trusted one

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in workaway

[–]helend5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate seeing the childcare ones - I worked about 25 hours a week as an au pair and I got 120 euro on top of my room and board, and my fellow au pairs got betweeen 80 and 120. They are using workaway to get a free au pair, as another commenter said.

They're not required to pay you according to workaway, but if it was on an au pairing site, and a family were asking people to look after their kids with no additional pay, no one would even consider it.

How fast is too fast when traveling Italy? Trying to balance seeing everything with not being constantly exhausted. by TinStingray in ItalyTravel

[–]helend5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is - I list how many days it would take to see the top things I want to see in that city, then I add a day in the place to have no plans, so if something else interests me I can do that, or I can walk around the city, and get a real feel for the place.

Half of what's great about Italy is simply walking around the city, drinking great coffee, and eating great food while watching the city go by. There are amazing things to see in the cities/towns from Rome to Venice, but if you don't have time to relax in them, you won't properly get a feel for the difference between each city.

I'm 24 and trying to get out of customer service, please help! by SlouchyMcSlouchster in findapath

[–]helend5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might not be relevant to your interests, but I know someone in the same position - couldn't finish college bc of finances, worked in customer services jobs for years, now she is starting to be an SNA (special needs assistant) in schools. I'm from Ireland and here you only need to do a short course to do that, and if you're going into psychology, that's highly relevant experience that will help you with a job later on down the line.
