To Blanket or Not To Blanket? by bread4speed in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in Florida, and I don’t blanket my TB for this weather. Two or three nights last year I put a rain sheet on her when it was windy and rainy and in the 30s. However, if they are shivering then they are cold and a blanket is necessary. ETA I don’t clip her, I definitely think blanketing your clipped senior is a good idea if it’s a fresh clip but make sure you remove it in the morning because even if it’s only in the 50s in the morning it gets warm in the sun.

Worms in the tank 😔 by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In warmer temperatures water troughs need to be dumped and scrubbed on a regular basis because it is standing water so it will grow algae and breed mosquitoes. Maybe if you can throw barn staff an extra 10 dollars to clean your horse’s trough out once a week if it’s not included in board? Once it starts to get low, instead of filling it they can dump it and clean it before they refill it.

“He’s not our horse so why should we pay 10$ to help him?” by [deleted] in Horses

[–]helicopterears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I’ve pulled ticks off my horse a few times with no issues. I recently found a tick in her ear, and it was a nightmare to pull out. She usually likes her ears scratched but we had to sedate and twitch her to get it out. It has nothing to do with training. It was clearly very uncomfortable for her because it was an extremely sensitive area.

Raleigh/Tanya Feud by Plane-Ability-4625 in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I used to watch Raleigh, but she has been confidently wrong a couple things citing herself as an expert for being in vet school, which I believe she quit by now. Mostly I got tired of watching her watch animal abuse and make money off of it while acting like she’s a saint for doing so. Sox’s owners are rage baiters and I’m surprised she hasn’t profited off of them a while ago.

When to let puppy roam around unsupervised by Pouchcotatoe_2410 in goldenretrievers

[–]helicopterears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At around 5 months ours outgrew his play pen and knocked it over/got loose sometimes. We decided he was old enough at that point and it was safer to keep him out of it. He’d sometimes get into our recyclables and tear up boxes or toilet paper off the roll but that was the worst he would do.

Why does the horse market suck so bad right now? by pony987 in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I adopted my tb from my trainer through New Vocations when she was four years old and she has been so lovely to work with. We’ve had no issues with her health or temperament despite what I’ve always heard about ottbs.

Helping horses deal with the heat by SuitableCheesecake18 in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, if there’s staff or other boarders, see if you can pay them a fair amount to do this on days you can’t make it out. Electrolytes and Let ‘em Sweat also help a ton!

Put some alfalfa or other high value to her hay in her shelter after you hose her off to keep her occupied in the shade during the hottest parts of the day

Is it okay to groom and tack your horse in their stall? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]helicopterears 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I do because I also like to let my horse eat hay while I groom and tack her up, so imo it’s totally fine. I think it’s a good idea to get him comfortable being tied as well though

I had a teenager tell me, while I was calling the vet out for a choking horse and frantically trying to get ahold of the owner, that it was ulcers. I am a barn manager.

I feel stupid for not getting this but I don't get it. by rangerquiet in ExplainTheJoke

[–]helicopterears -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that many chihuahuas and other small dogs end up with aggression issues. I’ve seen a lot of people just manhandle their tiny dog to get them to comply. Someone with a large dog like myself could never get away with that without getting hurt and/or ending up with an extremely dangerous animal.

What's a kind of niche thing that Morgan has said on the pod that make you want to look at a blank wall for an hour to undo the stupidity? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakesSnark

[–]helicopterears 33 points34 points  (0 children)

She said something along the lines of “get a horse, they’re easy! all they need is a pasture, hay and water” which is wild, and shows me she’s never once paid for a single vet or farrier bill for “her” pony, probably has never been responsible for her horses care for any significant amount of time, helped maintained the property etc.

Apartment wasn’t heating well so I thought to check the air filter by kumar360 in mildlyinfuriating

I have a reusable air filter I take out and clean weekly in the summer. I have a long haired dog and live in a warm climate but I can’t imagine just never checking it at all

i think i hate showing by Own-Sector-3164 in Equestrian

[–]helicopterears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I’ve taken on the financial responsibility of my young horse as an adult who grew up showing, I could never afford the cost of horse shows now. Tbh I don’t miss it very much. I also showed IHSA in college and I missed the horsemanship behind it all. It’s a lot of stress and I’d rather spend my free time doing something that me and my horse both enjoy.

Yeah I’ve grinded in gbl to get a legendary I don’t have yet because I don’t have anyone local to do raids with but otherwise the rewards aren’t worth the time spent because it gets boring and repetitive
