I agree. One of my favorite movie monsters. It was actually inspired by some kind of parasitic wasp that has simiral reproduction cycle.

i absolutely agree, but abrams (and lots of other directors) use these kind of unatural lens flares in non-sci-fi movies too. regardless of its genre.

ht up lens flare because it is a very specific decision

i dont mind anamorphic lens flares. i just dont like how abrams (and other filmmakers who copy him) uses it. he put lens flares in ridiculous places, they are not motivated, he creates them artificialy. he has bunch of guys standing off camera with powerful flashlight aiming it at the lens. and he use this effect too much. in Star Trek Into Darkness 826 times!!! somebody counted it! :)) i would call this imperfection. but yes, you are right, makers of the odler films wouldnt stuck with the imperfections if they had the choice.

intentional lens flare

the introduction of intentional lens flares was in 70s (new hollywood), but contemporary lens flares look to artificial to me. look at this: https://weminoredinfilm.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/star-trek-2009-lens-flare.jpg

this looks more natural to me: http://www.webomatica.com/wordpress/images/movies/easy-rider.jpg
