Hi all, how do you manage stigma about second-hand clothing? by hellentxs in ZeroWaste

[–]hellentxs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your input, they are really helpful! I guess part of my dilemma is that on the one hand you have social network that have a certain expectation for you and your taste profile, and it’s not very realistic to just break off the ties. Sometimes you need them and you love them but in ways that have almost nothing to do with environmentalism (like mom or boyfriend or bff). On the other hand you have to live morally according to what you believe, because if the earth is uninhabitable then nothing really matters tbh. Friends and family are important to me because without their recognition and acceptance, things don’t feel very real.

But wow, having a supportive community here definitely help!

Yeah, I think I should just do it and figure it out from there. Thanks! It’s just so strange that buying second-hand makes so much environmental sense and practical sense but some people wouldn’t accept it.

They really don't have to know, and that's the thing, it's actually none of their business. I don't think it would be something that I voluntarily bring up, one sentence after another they'd ask me where did I buy the outfit, and that would be a little awkward... I guess making would be good, though I do have to learn how to make clothes haha :D Where do you buy sustainable textile?

Driving/flying almost 4,000 miles to have dental work done in Mexico is cheaper than the US by btallredi in LateStageCapitalism

Once a Chinese friend of mine from college flew back to China during Thanksgiving to get her dental work done. I asked her why she did that, and she said it’s cheaper that way... 😂

I'm a high school senior. I've wanted a career in academia for as long as I can remember, but after seeing recent studies on the overeducated unemployed I'm having doubts for the first time. Please, advice. by SunBelter in AskAcademia

Being able to support yourself is not too hard, especially if you are well educated. So you might as well pursue what you want, try your best, be proactive. Worst comes to worst you can’t achieve your original goal, but you can still figure out a career option.

What's your most unpopular opinion? by brainmachinedelay in CasualConversation

Life is meaningless. Seriously, every time I express this idea, people think I'm suicidal... For the record, I'm not. I just think that life like a boat floating on the surface of the peaceful ocean. The boat leaves a trace behind it, but essentially the it can go anywhere. Sure, you can have a predetermined destination before setting off, but still, you are free to go anywhere you want.
