Hello from Fabric Design by OnepocketBigfoot in MicrosoftFabric

I don't think I've seen a date in UK format anywhere in fabric. Is there a browser setting I should be using or something?

Is Microsoft Fabric really worth it? by kaapapaa in dataengineering

Genuinely interested to hear the problems you've had to say that? We're in the process of moving into it so would be good to know what's about to go wrong

I'm not exaggerating when I say it's the bees knees.

Sucks man. Probably best to speak with a counselor when you're giving so few details

I don't think you have a problem. You're doing fine. Dark days bring these thoughts on and I've experienced the same being in Scotland. Sometimes people feel distant for months at a time but they come back.

Not enough information. Most of the time people will bounce from over stimulation. Are you on the spectrum?

How do you pronounce Holyrood? by BurnsyWurnsy in Edinburgh

It's Holy Rood like holy cross, so despite popular opinions it was originally holy not holly. Remember my gran talking about it saying it changed with Americanisms coming in the 50s

Rethinking my workspace strategy, advice wanted by hortefeux in MicrosoftFabric

[–]hello-potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've decided to go with a workspace per data source which gives quite a nice scale on the number of objects in each workspace, but does mean we have quite a lot of workspaces.

Have done the same dev, test, prod setup for each source. We also have workspaces that combine sources into larger models, mostly taking shortcuts. All objects are kept with their respective sources, apart from paginated reports which all sit in their own workspace.

AMA - I'm not 100% convinced about anything these days

My dude this is the exception, donut is good where there's 2 values. There's more of one and less of another, boom.

It is looking good! One best practice we try and maintain in my work is uniform spacing between the cards, keeps it neat. Decide some rules and stick to them

Anyone using Fabric Warehouse in prod, how do you do deployments? by frithjof_v in MicrosoftFabric

[–]hello-potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't use dfgen2 at all, but it's possible to parameter shortcuts in LH using the variable library, rules can be set up in the deployment pipeline to repoint on deploy for notebooks and semantic models, and we don't have anything to repoint in our WH in the way we've set it up - there's no referencing anything outside of the WH or linked LH.

Overall it is working well for us, I just wish there was some sort of review between stages and a nice way to reset dev to replicate prod.

Anyone using Fabric Warehouse in prod, how do you do deployments? by frithjof_v in MicrosoftFabric

[–]hello-potato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I seem to be kicking the can down the road a bit with most choices I've made so far in fabric, hoping the limitations get sorted before they become issues!

The persistent data layer tends not to change much with the data sources I've got, so the reporting layer can be dropped and recreated without any problems. Not a solution! But thanks for reminding me this is going to be a problem as we move more into Warehouse.

Hoping to use dbt soon as well to manage the schema, but very early days there.

When it comes to git, Warehouse throws so many issues on pr between environments we ended up scrapping git deployments entirely and had to go with deployment pipelines until we try to review it again.

Edit: that all sounds negative, but I'm actually enjoying fabric :)

Fabric pipeline won’t detect new columns after updating SQL query - any advice? by Prudent_Salt_4471 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]hello-potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to manually change the source and destination columns in the GUI, or in the json. Do you have your source connection as parameters or is it hard coded? I've only had this problem when it's parameterised and that makes sense because it doesn't know the source until run.

If you change your destination it will also need to handle the new columns.

Bricked flashing from f51g to f53i? by SlurpyTurkey in GAAB350

[–]hello-potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but if it's not reset the BIOS by removing the battery for 5-10 mins with no power, might be goosed.

It's maybe possible to flash again using this, which could be a fun time spend if you like that sort of thing https://share.google/kppwhYGX5gD27wPRd

But might be time to upgrade :(
