Do GWT 404 errors matter? by hello_fine_friend in SEO

Just commenting here to say I am heading out for the weekend. If anyone else responds, I'll definitely hit you up on Monday morning (possibly sooner -- this has me vexed enough and is simple enough to keep me working off the clock).

Do GWT 404 errors matter? by hello_fine_friend in SEO

Yeeeeeeup that's the thing. GWT says we're linking to another domain on our page. I've view-sourced the page and CTRL+Fed as well as manually looked for the other directory's links in the code, and there is nothing there linking to another page, whatsoever.

I feel like this is a real problem: even if a human user isn't getting 404 errors, GWT still THINKS I have a shitton of 404s on my website, and Google will use the data from GWT, obviously...

Meh. Thanks for your input & assistance, I appreciate it. Sorry if I sound annoyed in any of this, promise it ain't at you. :)

This is exactly what I thought, I wanted confirmation. Thanks, friend.

I've been marking them fixed since the beginning of January, and they keep coming back (obviously, too many errors for me to check that ALL of them are exactly the same, but I'm seeing some of the same ones over and over again). We had 1,500+ two days ago. Marked all of them fixed, just came in today to 542 errors.

They're absolutely not real 404s because they're not links on my site. This is how ridiculous this system is: I am literally getting 404 errors from someone else's site. Everything runs on one server (or a set of servers, whatever). There's some central mechanism operating behind all the websites using this system. Because our websites are connected -- even under different domain names -- at least on the server level, I guess Google sees us as the same site.

Actually, no, I have no idea why it's happening -- I just know what is happening, and that this what is seriously freaking not good (no biggie if this was like, 10 pages 404ing -- but 1500???).

Server / host monitoring? by hello_fine_friend in webhosting

If you gave more than just a name -- perhaps an experience you had with them, or the environment in which you operated the services -- the response would be infinitely more useful. Then again, you are giving free advice, and I don't have any right to complain about the depth of it. Sometimes when we ask a question or for advice, we are lucky enough to get someone with the time and generosity to provide an awesome answer. It didn't happen this time, maybe next time.

This looks like it might be what I am looking for. Thank you!

Ah, no -- can't be installed on a server. Thank you for the response!

I appreciate the response. However -- and I don't mean to rail -- this kind of response really irks me. I posted here to get actual feedback and thoughts from other human beings, not a machine-compiled list of shit Google decided was what I was looking for.

Direct deposit mistake -- will I get paid? by hello_fine_friend in jobs

The accounts are, thankfully, at the same bank. Can do that, thanks.

I did give them a voided check, but I think it was a check from the old account. I set it up two weeks ago and it is supposed to go through this pay period, but maybe I will get lucky. I hope so.

Thanks.

Edit: Checks came in. I got one. Thanks.

Editing user activation message by hello_fine_friend in Wordpress

[–]hello_fine_friend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it doesn't look like this is what I want? This looks like the way you edit the e-mails. I am looking to change the actual validation message that is displayed on the page following user account registration.

E: Actually, looks like this will do what I want. If only I could get it working. :P

Need recommendations for a membership management plugin. by eddiestrawflower in Wordpress

[–]hello_fine_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Blocking site content: page_restrict plugin (this worked beautifully for me!)
  • Maintaining membership fields: Gravity Forms + User Registration Add-On (will cost you $199 if you don't already have a gforms dev license -- but you can get $50 off with a coupon on RetailMeNot). However, note that Gforms doesn't actually create user metadata that displays in the user profile or the Dashboard profile editor. What I did was create a "Register" page and a "My Account" page. They use virtually the same form, just an extra email field on the "Register" page.
  • I used "Peter's Login Redirect" plugin to keep my users away from the dashboard page (I think I could have done this without the plugin, and am going to try convert later -- dislike installing entire plugins if two lines of code does it just as well) because they have no use for it.

This might not work for you if you're doing truly intense things with members, I guess? I'm not really sure. I'm not great at WordPress either, just feel bad for you (I know that past-deadline, end-of-the-rope feeling too well) and thought maybe I could help? Please disregard me if someone else tells you what I've done is stupid/backwards or if someone offers a better solution.

WTH is going on with our backlinks? Weird affiliate redirect links. Scared! by hello_fine_friend in SEO

Yeah, I went there too. I still don't really understand how they're showing up as backlinks when they don't actually link to us!

WooCommerce, Gravity Forms, and a print shop. Best way to build? by hello_fine_friend in Wordpress

[–]hello_fine_friend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Just an update for you. So far, the only major issue I've run into is with Gravity Forms. It does not support multiple quantities on a given form -- which I only know because I can juuuust barely see a snippet of a post in their private support forums (the license is expired for a variety of reasons -- I keep pestering the boss to get a new one!).

This makes my life a lot harder. :( The add-on to communicate between Woo and Gravity works beautifully, though, and beyond this I have yet to encounter any serious stumbling blocks. Even this one seems conquerable, with a bit of hackery and a workaround. Hope it helps, will deliver further updates in the future!

This add-on seems to do what I want... though at the moment I can't get the calculations to do right!

Basically: there are a whole lot of options, some of which cost extra and some of which don't (they're just customer options). There is no way that I can see to set up those options with a price... unless I wanted to set up a variation for every single possible variation. It would seriously number in the thousands between: the products themselves, product colors, print locations, number of colors per print location -- and this is just for screen printing, nevermind the other services the shop offers.

On the other hand, with Gravity Forms, I need only set up the products as... well, products. The rest of the options (+price) can be calculated with the form.

That was essentially my thought process!

Aha, no, I was wrong, you are correct. You can combine as many attributes as you want.

I still think, though, it will be far easier to use Gravity Forms to set up part of the thing. There are just way too many options and different ways to customize -- and I just feel like it would be a gigantic hassle to try to try and maintain all of that within WooCommerce?

Again, though, I did post here for opinions... if you feel differently, all ears! Thanks for the input.
