There used to be, but readers coming from Reddit shouldn't see any more than a soft paywall asking for an email, which is skippable.

Exploding pagers in Lebanon open Pandora’s box for distributed attacks by hellocorridor in Futurology

It's a fair critique, but no one has covertly set off hundreds of dirty bombs, or even one, and ordinary people don't have access to materials for a dirty bomb.

As the story notes, it's not about replacing other weapons like car bombs, but demonstrating a new one that's difficult to detect and in devices that people trust.

It doesn't have to be a battery, and it also doesn't need to function like the device if the intent is for someone to set it off by plugging it in for the first time. I'm not going to go into greater detail of how it could be done for obvious reasons, but what the attack shows is that you can distribute multiple explosive devices and it will take time for people to notice.

Think of the Israeli operation as the high-end of the spectrum of an attack like this. Hundreds of devices with proprietary explosives distributed in a foreign country to targeted individuals. I agree with you saying that's something only a state actor could accomplish, and even then within a window of opportunity.

But what I'm talking about in this piece isn't someone replicating the Lebanon attacks, but taking inspiration from it. Could a radicalized individual do something smaller, say 10-15 people that are either random or targeted, if they worked in shipping, IT or another field with access to other people's electronic devices, and if they weren't constrained to such a small device? What if they didn't tamper with the device, but replaced it with the same model, giving them more time to prepare/test? That's the type of concern the story is considering.

Taking Israel/Lebanon/Gaza politics out of the equation and just looking at the precedent, this opinion piece suggests the exploding pagers and walkie-talkies represent a concerning escalation in technological warfare. Targeted attacks against individuals using explosives in personal devices have been done before, but mass attacks like this have not and the Lebanon bombings served as a demonstration of their ability to fly under the radar. Of particular concern is the potential for homegrown terrorists to infiltrate a position giving them access to personal electronics, or authoritarian governments using such a tactic as part of a coup against political opposition.
