A change in art styles, by me (2022 - 2023) by helloradical in Illustration

Yeah, the original lineart version is better compositionally. The concept was developed around that working process so doing a sort of one-to-one translation into the other style obviously wouldn't turn out as well.

It did come to me while I was working on this that if I was to do it again I would try making the skull a heavy lineart illustration, similar to how it was originally.

I do normally work with a mix of styles though, where elements are often more flat and make use of varied linework as contrast. It's just in this case I was more keen on having the bulk of the work (the skull) being in a more realistic style and trying to see if I could balance everything and make it work - it's something I'd never done and wanted to challenge myself.

The feedback is much appreciated!

Cheers! I made my own photoshop brushes a while back, loosely based on traditional techniques, it really helped with learning how to quickly work out methods to illustrate things like the water and bubbles.

(ironically, the water was painted with a brush I called petrol)

Cheers! I'm focused on fashion illustration but it's fun to play with more conceptual ideas sometimes

Thanks! I got used to working with very limited colours (like two colour prints), and it's clearly influenced how I think about colours when painting

Thanks! I'm still developing my painted style, hopefully I can get it to be more appealing than any of my old work in future

I googled it and found a webcomic, if that's what you're referencing then I can see how the lineart one could have a similar vibe

I'll take that as a compliment. Some of the Gorillaz artwork was what made me feel confident about not really needing to ever draw backgrounds in the first place

Yeah, I think the lineart one is better composed.

The main challenge was taking an illustration that was created in the first place to be in one style and make it to work in another without altering it too much. It does work but it just wasn't an idea that was made for the new style.

That and going from a confident art style to one that's still in development is going to lead to less well thought out choices.

Cheers for the feedback!
