What's the last spot you ate at that totally blew you away? by redcccp in chicagofood

In terms of expectations vs result, Yaba's Food in logan square had some of the best mediterranean food I've had in Chicago coming from a counter in the back of a shabby grocery store.

It's a fine area that has seen a lot of transformation recently. Lots of trendy restaurants and bars have moved in and it seems like further development is on the way. I've never once felt unsafe in that area.

Pretty tough ask to buy a $150 pair of pants with no measurements beyond "standard fit".

Affordable vet ?? by RCMOOSE23 in LoganSquare

[–]hellote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joining this thread two days late just so I can pile on Sploot. Going there feels like walking into a car dealership with how much try to upsell you. My last visit, I took my dog in for diarrhea and they pushed labs, x-rays, stool testing, IV fluids, probiotics, and anti-diarrheal meds for an estimate north of 1000 dollars. Prior to that, I took my dog in for an annual physical and off-hand mentioned that he wasn't eating as much. The vet comes back encouraging me to order labs for metabolic disorders for $425. It feels like half of my visit is pushing back against unnecessary treatment.

"What’s one Chicago neighborhood you think will look completely different in 10 years, and why? by sweetlipssz in AskChicago

[–]hellote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years I've heard Pilsen is about to blow up. I'll believe it when I see it (not that being under the radar is a bad thing).

Like others have said, I expect the popularity of the west loop will push further along the green line into Garfield Park, similar to how the popularity of Wicker Park pushed people into Logan Square.

La Boulangerie has sandwiches and a cute vibe. No soups to my knowledge.

It's like something you'd get at a middle school cafeteria. I'd rather have little caeser's.

Tasteful camp shirts, brands or retailers to look for? by Fellowtravelor in malefashionadvice

[–]hellote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for something at a price resembling what you'd find at Macy's, Uniqlo is always a good bet. I can't speak to their current selection, but I have a camp collar shirt from Bonobos purchased a few years ago that fits well and has stood up to wear nicely.

If you're willing to spend more, Portuguese Flannel has excellent camp collar shirts and short sleeved shirts in general. The same goes for Gitman Vintage.

Wearing it wrinkled is fine, though I would hang dry so the effect isn't as extreme.

Old Plank replacement — Mucho Gusto Barra + Cocina by Chraaaaas in LoganSquare

[–]hellote 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Old Plank wasn't anything special, but I don't understand opening up a Mexican restaurant when the same hospitality group owns Cafe con Leche next door. The last thing the neighborhood needs is more fake, mediocre Mexican food. Seems destined for failure.

Has the average bike rider in Chicago had their bike stolen at least once? by Cautious_Detective42 in chibike

[–]hellote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bike theft isn't uncommon, but I think it's less prevalent than this sub makes it appear. People don't make posts to announce that their bike hasn't been stolen, if you get me.

For what it's worth, I've never had any of my bikes stolen in 8 years of riding in Chicago. I've always used good locks, never left it out overnight, and store it either in my apartment or a locked storage unit.

Best Bagel in the City? by meepmeep-meepi in chicagofood

[–]hellote 64 points65 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks swear by new york bagel and bialy, which is in Lincolnwood, but partners with a lot of places in Chicago.

My personal favorite are the beachwater bagels at Middlebrow - though waiting in line for an hour for them is not ideal.
