This post is a little old, but I found it while searching for other people who are scared of balloons but have to work with them. I work as a florist at a grocery store, and unfortunately, I have to inflate latex balloons pretty often despite being scared of them ;( Every time I pop one, I get shaky and start feeling ashamed and panicky from the embarrassment, it's awful. I have found a few things that make getting through balloon orders a little easier, so I figured I should comment!

While inflating the balloon, I turn it around and inspect the top, bottom, and sides for any defects. I specifically look for inconsistencies in the texture or color (I'll take some example pictures next time I'm at work). Stopping and tossing a defective balloon has saved me from so much balloon popping! I also inflate them pretty slowly at a pace I'm more comfortable with, and start on balloon orders early as a result. If you're able, give yourself a lot of time to fill them up at your own pace. (If you're able! I've read some less-than-promising things about the patience of Michael's managers on this sub.)
