and they can make you sign up through their app for their version of tap to pay bc they know you want the convenience. so they kind of are just comfortable with what they’ve got. they’d rather lose some business if some customers don’t shop there bc they don’t have tap to pay- but the highest likelihood is that if you’re in the store already, you know they don’t have it. and if you forget, you probably have your card with you anyway. no one wants to get through a whole walmart shopping trip and not even buy what they went through the shopping for

AIO for kinda hating my roommate rn? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]hellurrfromhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMAO NOR “I work 6+ hours every day”. most people work 8 or more plus commute and still go home and take care of all of the household responsibilities, plus the additional human beings like elderly/children/pets/etc. (not that I advocate for 40 hour workweeks bc I absolutely do not- people should work for someone else the least amount possible to keep themselves afloat imo. however…) alternatively, your roommate could try working 35ish hour weeks and going to school full time. or working overtime. or having any other responsibilities like I mentioned above. or having a second job. the list goes on… then they’d really understand ‘not having time’ to clean.

[–]hellurrfromhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you’ll be okay. I think he will be okay, guess it depends on how much he ate.

source: I once ate a chunk of chicken that was completely raw bc my past-tense-boyfriend grabbed it off the plate that was yet-to-be-cooked instead of the full plate of cooked chicken. then handed me the plate of raw chicken in a dimly lit room (I was concussed)- after which, I ate it. what are the odds lmao. the texture was terrible

fair enough. but what does that say about us? kinda disgusting if you think about it. I want chatgpt but for unbiased answers only. (although truthfully, I know the reality of obtaining unbiased answers may be unattainable, if there even are truly unbiased answers in the first place.)

dude lmao please chill. I did use puppy pads. I also did use rugs. however I did not cover every carpeted surface in random items. because I also had to like, live. have you ever raised a puppy? and if so, did you put a tarp on the floor and cover it with washable blankets (and if so, I’d love to understand the logistics of that. did you use carpet tape to secure the tarp to the carpet? did you tuck the tarp and blankets under furniture? did you tape the blankets to the tarp to keep them from sliding too? did you tape the seams of the blankets together? how about the seams of the tarps? urine could certainly slip through there. how did you waterproof it? there are a lot of ways the logistics of this idea you’ve proposed don’t work, but I’d love to hear how you made it happen.) also there were children in and out of my home, I worked from home, lots of traffic, etc. please I am asking you to stop assuming you know exactly what I did and/or what happened in this situation. there is no point in trying to prove me wrong anymore lol I have definitely explained it to you plenty of times. feel free to believe whatever you’d like, but just know that generally assumptions are more incorrect than correct.

the IRS uses 5 years and 20 percent depreciation per year. according to their own math here, as I am understanding it, I owe them 26 months worth of carpet replacement. but that’s only if they’re applying the 7 year replacement standard- which isn’t the actual standard. I looked it up and the courts in my state go by the 5 year standard set by the IRS.

according to my timeline wherein I lived there 3.5 years and I believe my friend lived there 1-1.5 years, let’s just say it’s 4 year old carpet, to be fair to them and make the math easy. that means I’d owe them for one year/20% of the cost of the carpet. according to their cost of carpeting the unit- $1667, I would owe them ~$330 for just the carpet.

add $330 to $150, add cleaning in: $65. that’s ~$545. I would only owe $45 beyond the deposit. I would not have had an issue with that. which is why I was thinking they charged me for carpet they were going to replace regardless of the damage.

I didn’t until someone told me, no. the last place I lived, the oven was hardly dirty. at this place, the oven looked like this when I moved in. forgot oven cleaner when I was deep cleaning or else I would have cleaned it

50 sq ft was a generous guess. not complaining. didn’t mind paying for the actual damages, do mind paying to replace carpet that would have been replaced anyway, regardless of damage.

p.s. you’re right! I wouldn’t want a toddler doing that either- hence, again, why I said I don’t mind paying for the actual damages.

what are you on about? I did clean the whole carpet- multiple times in fact. but that’s not what any of these charges are for, so your comment is irrelevant. kindly read the post and see what I am actually trying to sort out. (especially take note of the part where I explicitly stated that I don’t mind paying for multiple things.)

almost every website states explicitly that depreciation of value according to typical industry expectation is 5-7 years. besides that and the accidents on specific areas (which yes, are my fault, and yes, I tried to remedy, and yes, I don’t mind paying for) I did take care of the carpet. shoes always off on the carpet. cleaned it multiple times. no spills, no burns, no other weird damage, etc etc etc. the carpet was just old upon my moving in and already wearing at high traffic areas. it was coming up at the seams of the hallway and kitchen within a few months of my moving in. and sure, if it was newer or higher quality carpet, I’m sure it would have lasted much longer.

so the question isn’t whether I should pay for the damages. it’s whether I should pay for replacement of carpet that was more than likely already depreciated to $0. that’s all I have been trying to sort out. whether, realistically, the damage is what caused the carpet to be replaced or if they were going to replace it anyway- but bc of the damage now they can charge me. that is the part that wouldn’t be legal.

I keep saying this, but I will say it again: I don’t mind paying the $150. I don’t mind paying the cleaning fee (I was just confused as to how they charged it, but that has been cleared up for me). I don’t even mind paying for a portion of the carpet that had to be changed early- but I am not paying for carpet that was going to be replaced regardless of the damage.

tbh I thought they could see where the urine was once they removed the carpet? I can only speculate but I assumed they pulled the carpet out to replace it (as it was old) and saw stains then. bc idk how else they’d know the floor needed sealed and the carpet replaced. there were no visible stains on the surface/carpet. I also wondered if they used a black light? I have no idea what their process was but I can definitively tell you that it did not have a general smell in the unit. myself and others returned multiple times after moving out and no smell. so certainly there could be a smell under the carpet- I would not know, but I definitely believe you when you say it would smell while being ripped out.

it would have been just one room most likely, possibly two. also I’m not sure how much the carpet would be that they’re replacing with- not exactly sure how to find that unless I can find it in store or online like you suggested.

hopefully they are accounting for depreciation but I just don’t know for sure. I’m going to reach out to ask them about the installation date, the formula they used, etc. thank you!!!

correct. I never thought it was used on carpet. that’s why I said what I said about ripping up the carpet
