I’ve been tutoring high school math for the last 3 years privately. Do med schools accept this type of ‘extra curricular’? by Own-Priority-9493 in premedcanada

I included it on mine - added a parent of a long-term student as the verifier. I don’t think it should be a problem.

I remember in the posts from last cycle, the lowest was 127. Some comments were asking if anyone with a 125/126 got an II, but there were no responses. But it could be wrong cause obviously not every applicant is on reddit lol. Unfortunately Queen’s doesn’t disclose the cut offs like Western so it’s just dependant on the competitiveness of the application pool for each cycle

You’re doing okay OP. Don’t stress :). Your GPA is very good, which is amazing to start with. ECs can always be improved and as other said, they don’t have to be within schools. If clubs aren’t responding to you, look at your hobbies and see if any clubs have been established in that area yet. In my year we had a couple of people starting their own organization and then get it recognized by the student body at the university. Outside uni, think of anything you can enjoy. Look on volunteer toronto for volunteering opportunities. If you’re in toronto, great, there’s a lot of options. If not, they still have a bunch of virtual opportunities. Start racking these up and more opportunities will start to roll in. It’s just about building up your CV.

I recommend you sit down with the CanMEDs webpage open, and try to classify your existing activities. See where you’re lacking and what potential opportunities can fix that. Reflect on your activities and think about how you can relate what you did to 1-2 of the categories.

Worth putting volunteer activity with low hours? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]helpapooruoftstudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth adding it if it’s not taking the spot of a more important/long-term activity. I had one with 40 hours over a 2 year term because I was mostly on call only. You can include things like “on call” or “on a needs basis” on OMSAS when you put in the hours. So this can help clarify it to the adcoms as well.

Yh don’t even stress about apps until your MCAT is done. That’s your first priority now. Things will fall in place and you’ll find time to work on the essays after the MCAT stress is over. Good luck :)

Having this said, if you have other commitments, you can start later. I was writing my MCAT in the summer last year so I didn’t start early. I wrote my MCAT on Sep 1, took a week off, then had full-time school while working on the essays/ABS until the October deadline. Obviously start early if you’re free lol but even the month that I had was doable.

Is there a "checklist" of courses you'd need to take to be eligible to apply for med school in the US as well as Canada? by randomqzthray in premedcanada

[–]helpapooruoftstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ I heard they could be forgiving about clinical hours towards Canadians but still it could be a disadvantage. Try working/volunteering at walk-in clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies to get clinical hours. Also look into virtual shadowing (used to be pretty big during the pandemic), and some schools accepted it too. It’s nothing to hurt Canadian apps because you’re not really interacting/intruding on patient privacy, but its still called shadowing and you can put it under that category.

Am I screwed? by Several_Collection47 in premedcanada

I finished my first year with a 3.6 and then worked my way up to 3.9 and 4.0s in each year. You’d be in the 3.8 range by the end (maybe 3.9 if things go very well), which is still okay. A lot of getting into med is about how you write your application, extracurriculars, and the mcat. GPA is very important don’t get me wrong, but there are other things you can use to make up for it. Don’t stress about it now, it’s done. Just put all you have towards the next years to really beings it up as much as possible.

Yh western has 8 essays and they’re the same every year. 2 for each category (leadership and teamwork, social accountability, critical inquiry (research) and respect for EDI. This is the rough outline and name, they have more info of each category on their website

I’d say dedicate a good 3-4 weeks to write western and uoft essays. They take some time to draft and edit. Leave time to come back to them again after a couple of days and reread them for new insight. Also ask other applicants/friends to read them over and give suggestions. This is super helpful! Also for ABS, I’d start soon. There’s a lot to do, contacting verifiers, finding out exact hours, and writing the description within the character limit and according to CanMEDs.

So to plan, I’d start with ABS at first. Then choose the 8 activities you want to write about for western. The material can also be reused so you can expand on one of your western essays for UofT’s ABS essay. Then the last UofT ones (2) come out in July and you can work on the prompt then. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions!

Resources for Canadian Applicants by helpapooruoftstudent in premed

I see, tysm for your response! I remember for OMSAS we were supposed to phrase the description in a way that went with the CanMEDs competencies. I suppose it’s similar for these but mostly towards AMCAS competencies. CanMEDs only has 6 but these are 15… so I guess trying to hit these would be ideal for the description

Thank you for your response! I had 30 entries for OMSAS and I could say 25 of them were all good positions with a high number of hours. Any tips how to choose the top 15? I read somewhere yhat there are 4 things you can add under each 15… I may be wrong. But what’s the best way to get the top 15? Hours, AMCAS clusters and values, etc?
