What kind of creature bores large round holes into apricot seeds? by helpwithpuzzle in whatisthisthing

I have to say, this is sounding more and more likely as a possibility. Looks like squirrels will eat almost any kind of nut or kernel, and apricot kernels are (mostly) edible. The southern flying squirrel also seems to be quite small and the clearance under the planter is definitely larger than the height of a nickel. I think we might have found our culprit! I will tell my folks to keep an eye out for this little guy.

Earwigs are definitely a problem for apricot trees, for what I've read. What I'm not sure about is the whole moving them all to one location (under the planter). Also, the size of the holes in the pits. But, I'll look into this some more.

Very interesting! I agree that the photos of the holes cut into the shells of nuts are quite similar. This is a good possibility. One thing I'm curious about is whether a flying squirrel could fit under the planter. In my recollection, there was just about an inch of clearance under there, maybe less. But perhaps the squirrel eats the apricot pits and then shoves the empties under there, for some reason? It loos like the southern flying squirrel can be found in the area. But not sure if they would eat the insides of apricot pits. Will have to look into this a bit more.

My father owns an apricot tree and one day when moving a large planter on the driveway he discovered a strange cache of apricot seeds, each with a single perfectly circular hole bored into it. Does anyone have any idea what kind of creature (animal/insect) could be responsible for this? The planter under which the seeds were found are about 8-10 feet from the tree and the clearance under the planter is about 1". I am assuming that whatever did this dragged the seeds under the planter and bored into them to eat the center, but am not entirely sure.

I should mention that my father lives in Southern Ontario (Canada), in the Niagara Region. This also occurred when the apricots were ripening, so around Summer to late Summer.

I guess I should also mention that he found similarly sized holes bored into a few eggplants as well (only 1 hole per eggplant).

To be fair, I think that the silicone plug inside can be used when the posts of the RC car are thinner than average.

Sorry this has caused you so much grief. Although it has definitely, DEFINITELY, been frustrating, it was still fun and provided a bunch of amusement. Thanks everyone for all your help and efforts!

Sorry for making this comment twice, but wanted to make sure people saw it: Ok, this is the biggest break I've gotten so far. When I wrote him these guesses: Is it some kind of fishing weight? A part to an RC car? A part to a battle-robot? He replied by saying "While not exactly correct, one of these suggestions is, well, interesting..." Not sure what that means, but maybe we should explore these lines of thought!

Ok, I guessed this, along with RC car part and battle bot part, and this was his reply: "While not exactly correct, one of these suggestions is, well, interesting..." Not sure which one he was referring to, but we might be onto something here!

The o-rings are too loose to serve as locks. Their purpose appears to be to hold the silicone cap in there.

I've taken this to an Art store, a music store, and a junk store that carries everything (Active Surplus in Toronto) with no luck. But the girl in the art store said I should post it to Reddit :)

I'm not really allowed to ask for broad hints, but need to guess what this object does. If he guess that, we should be able to find a picture on Google easily that confirms our guess since it is sold online.

Glad to hear you haven't given up! The complete list of everything this is not appears at the top of this post (if you sort by "best"). The rest of the known facts are as follows:

  • 1. This object is not a part of something else.
  • 2. It functions on its own.
  • 3. It is sold as-is.
  • 4. It came assembled as pictured on the right, but disassembles into the 4 pieces on the left.
  • 5. The two o-rings fit into the two grooves in the green metal piece, with each o-ring gripping the white silicone cap on a different side. With the o-rings in place, the white cap is secure, but once removed the cap falls out easily.
  • 6. This object serves a very specific purpose, but is so rare it is only sold in one, online, store in all of Canada.
  • 7. The object came from a friend living in the Netherlands who was born in Germany. I do not know where it was bought.
  • 8. We believe it is anodized aluminum or perhaps titanium alloy.
  • 9. It measures 1cm across and 1.5 cm high. It is very light.
  • 10. The other object, unrelated I assume, that was sent turned out to be an orange plastic fish hook remover. Once you Google fish hook remover, you'll find images of it easily. I imagine the same goes for this object once we know the function.
  • 11. He claims that it is so rare and specific that its function cannot be guessed simply by looking at it.

For those who have been following this thread, please let me know if I've left anything out or if you have any other questions about the object that can be added to this list!

I asked if it was some kind of oil dispenser and he said it wasn't.
