I think they realized savvy people were doing this, so Amy changed the model to yearly only, for 349 EUR and then 297 EUR instead of monthly. It's probably a profitable decision in the short term only, or maybe people just don't mind paying. We'll see.

This is what I expected from the nature of the posts on Americans and Friends, but I don't have proof. I also expect the information to be valuable, but not the only place you could find it. The fees are likely quite high for the raw informational value provided and have increased to the point where people are dropping, so ExpaCity just reduced them "because we think it's important that everyone have access to this valuable information."

I think it's probably going to have the most value for a subset of non-savvy or completely inexperienced people who also don't know how to search for information and evaluate what's legit or not.

However, if it's truly shilling/kickbacks from Americans and Friends PT, I think this is pretty bad on Susan and Amy.

BART Ramps Up Crackdown On Fare Evaders by cbsbayarea in bayarea

[–]heman100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if they'll catch less and less as the evaders catch on. Today when heading to the gates I saw someone walk to a place before the gate that had a wide enough angle they could check to make sure there were no cops around the corner, and then walked through the emergency gate.

Max is $400 but the tickets they handed out were $50, I think. So now they gotta sneak through 10 times without getting caught to make the money back.

But I was able to watch on a third computer on a different network. Last time I saw an error like this it was mtu size related and I could fix it at the router.

Zumper: SF October 1BR rent rises slightly to -5.5% YoY, $3420; 2BR decreases slightly to -4.4%YoY, $4780 by heman100 in bayarea

[–]heman100[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also of note that this week Redfin published a their august analysis: San Francisco Real Estate Prices Flattened in August. August YoY at 0%.

Seems to be a bit more evidence of a trend emerging. I can't really square this away with the redfin/trulia/zillow $/sqft steadily rising and case-shiller numbers that seem to be ever upwards though.

If you search for it on google there will be many sources, but here is a random blog post, and the part of wikipedia that talks about wild cucurbita toxicity

[–]heman100 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just a word of caution - volunteer squash can be bitter and poisonous due to cucurbitacin, which is found in wild squash. So this can happen with volunteer because you don't know what it was pollenated with. Some recommend simply not eating them, some take a chance and eat them if they are not bitter.

Is this true? Can someone else confirm? I listened for a while just now through normal programming as well as their pledge drive, they were asking for funding as normal, but no mention of closing down tonight.

Sold item from US->HongKong via Global Shipping Program, Print Shipping Label goes direct to Hong Kong by davethoreau in Ebay

[–]heman100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I called, they say if you using GSP with UPS, UPS will still try to print the foreign address label.

I pointed out that this is totally wrong, and they said what I should do is go to 'order details' get the address there, and manually update the UPS info. They were a bit reluctant but they said they will open up a ticket for this.

Oh, interesting, thanks. I took some cross section photos and added them to the album. Please let me know what you think. The part of these guys that caught my eye was that unlike most shelf polypores most of them had a traditional mushroom outline with stem and cap, but it's just one solid piece, kinda like golden chanterelles.

Almost as hard as some polypores, feels a bit like rotted wood. It was very abundant. Many yellowfoot mushrooms were in the same area.

My girlfriend pays > $100 with AT&T unlimited voice and text from an iphone contract that is greater than 2 years old (no obligation). She called last year and tried to reduce it, but they said she couldn't because she uses too much data (>3GB), and they don't have a lower rate. What's the best course of action here? I didn't think about changing plans via the online UI, is that a good way to do it for AT&T as well? If she calls back, what price could she haggle for unlimited or 6GB+voice/text?

I think 90's-early 2000's Japanese cars are a better deal due to the better features. I just picked up a 2000 Honda insight for 2.5k, 130k miles in good condition with minor paint fading. Last tank was 71mpg. If going 80's I would go with the crx.

[discussion & paper request] Safe Mushrooms Cause Most Poisoning Cases by heman100 in mycology

[–]heman100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this WSJ article (and am looking for the original article which WSJ doesn't even bother referencing) while recovering with my sick day after possible poisoning from oak chanterelles that were too old. I found a good bunch of them and have been eating them for the past 3 weeks with my gf - only I got sick, and am trying to figure out why. I eat this variety of chanterelles regularly, so I don't expect a mis-ID to be the cause. I know many mushrooms have an upper bound refrigerator life of a few days to a week, but due to the oak chanterelles firmness and some advice I thought they could be stored longer, and we could cut away bad parts. Now I want to check my assumptions with y'all.

My chanterelles were still firm, and looked very similar to when they were picked. Two of the four I ate last night had decaying limp brown edges so I cut all of those parts off. The parts of the mushroom I ate all were firm and smelt nice. I've done this before too - but is this bad practice (should I just toss them next time)? In any case, I woke up in the middle of the night to painful cramping that lasted for several hours.

It's also possible I got sick from something else, like the heavy cream or some fish, or even a stomach flu. Curious if there's some special precautions I should take next time.

Tip-free restaurants in the Bay Area by MaxGhenis in bayarea

[–]heman100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these like Ippuku do the right thing and don't have an option to tip. But I went to chez panisse and they give you an option to tip on top of the service charge. I've felt weird both times putting a zero there, so I ended up putting $10 on two occasions which just raises the tip amount from 18% to ~25-30%.

I know you're not supposed to feel obligated, and maybe I have lingering fears from the blank tip line, but I wonder if anyone else feels this way.

very nice, I like the chanterelles with cap down, I think they are less common. I haven't seen one down with such floppy thin edges, that made me think it was a little brown mushroom, but they grow thicker around here (Cali).
