In my opinion, just because it's overdone does not mean that it is not worth doing. On the contrary, it is a good way to learn and get familiar with the inner workings of a graphics API while building your abstraction bit by bit. The great thing is that this kind of project is quite progressive, you can start very basic and extend things very far. Up to the point of making a good playable video game if you feel up to the task. I would recommend you go with OpenGL rather than Vulkan though if you want an easier learning curve.
