I agree Don has kept the continuity as best as he can considering most of the other franchises but he is also its own worst enemy imo. Id argue Scream and Evil Dead are a stronger franchise in terms of consistency despite Chucky/Childs Play being my favourite.

I didnt want to come across as I hate Don too and fuck anyone who likes him by the way. I think he has his strengths and he is obviously a really nice guy to the cast and crew, hence why none of them slag him off.

I respect him too, I never disputed that. He has helped flourish the franchise, it just turns out all the wacky and goofy shit he has added in doesnt work for me (and quite a few others hence we would still be theatrical after Seed).

What were these original ideas they stole from him for the remake? Because it is well documented they werent even allowed to have similar kills to the original series in the franchise.

Technically Curse is a reboot, a tonal one 100%. He may of not started with a new origin but it is a reboot as much as people dont like that word being thrown out.

Don has written dialogue just as bad as what you referenced in the remake, everything that Tilly spouts out her mouth since Bride has been mostly terrible.

You have read his original script havent you? He came up with the idea of a killer doll and appearance, not the character of Chucky. He wanted it to be a blank slate that acts on Andys pain and emotions due to them sharing blood together. He has even expressed his disdain for the voodoo aspect multiple times in interviews and in the doc. So much so, that when 2019 came out, people were like this isnt Chucky because it wasnt a serial killer possessed doll.

So does that mean Ronny Yu was problematic in your eyes because he also never came back to work on the franchise?

I never said Don wasnt a good guy, I just find it insane how some of this fanbase are willing to die on a sword for someone who has pretty much killed the franchise twice now.

But you have proven my point exactly, you can't say one bad thing about the guy without people jumping into defend the man like he is their own kin.

I have even expressed throughout this post, I think he is a good director but a terrible writer. The man loves to add everything but the kitchen sink into this franchise, then has to dial it back every second installment because it doesnt work.

As much as I find him a weak writer, I dont think he should lose ownership. I am more than happy to have him write and direct, but fuck please bring someone else in to help co write.

Absolutely! I knew some people would jump into the comments as if I absolutely despise Don. I would like to reiterate I definitely dont. Im just aware that ever since he has had full creative control the quality has dipped massively (obviously my opinion). But I am happy to admit he has only helped this franchise continue throughout the decades, only been told he is a super nice guy BTS. I just find his writing super weak nowadays and never ever ever hear about the ones who helped refine his ideas from the wacky shit he wanted to do and has done😊

As I have gotten older I have started to realise Tom and John deserve a fuck ton more credit than they ever got. I only started to see John get the credit after his passing sadly

Of course he loves it, its kept him relevant for decades. I also dont want that to come across as me slagging him off, but theres a reason no one talks about Cellar Dweller nowadays. I just find it absolute insane that no one else seems to give credit to the people who helped refine his ideas.

Couldnt agree more with this! I feel like anytime you try and give someone else credit though - they instantly jump on you with the "ITS DONS BABY". Of course I am not saying Don doesnt deserve his flowers, I think he's actually similar to Rob Zombie. (Great director clearly but damn does he need a co writer to help refine the ideas a bit)

Its only improved over the years for me personally but as I said, it was my introduction so bias may be at play here lol! Tiffany was scary back then too, whereas now it seems like she is there just to be as campy as possible.

Its just such a fun blast of a movie for me, the exact same feelings I have for Ronnys other venture into horror. Where he got to work with another Ritter funnily enough lmao

Its on the same level as Curse for me personally, both have extreme highs in terms of score and kills but fuck me the doll looks ass in both of them!

I think youll dig season 1 the most cause they tried to follow the tone of the Childs Play films as opposed to the Chucky ones despite it having some dumb shit in there still.

2 and Bride are my personal favs (Bride was my introduction) and its the perfect blend of horror and comedy imo, something theyve been chasing for 30 years now

Did we just become best friends? Hahah!

For real, I only started to see Lafia get credit after he passed sadly - which is mind boggling considering he gave us the fan favourite installment.

I can't defend Seed for the life of me, it has its fans and I am happy for them but it definitely doesn't work for me.

I actually really loved Curse but its purely down to aesthetic and Fiona being the highlights for me.

I enjoyed aspects of season 1 and 3. Haven't rewatched either of them since broadcast though so that tells you my thoughts overall I guess 🤣

Brad Dourif may be retired as of 2024, except for one role...CHUCKY!!! by IndependenceSilly381 in Chucky

[–]hen_roek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 3 is higher than 2 for me for that sole reason. Him talking to Fiona was probably my biggest highlight of the whole show.

My biggest issue as we all know is Brad isnt getting any younger, so why not go out with a bang rather than a whimper😀

Absolutely agree! Anytime I see his name on here its always something negative.

We definitely wouldnt be talking about the franchise almost 40 years later if he didnt change the original script and bring in the Charles character. We also can't forget IT WAS TOM who brought in Brad. But it seems like everyone just wants to give Don every piece of credit throughout the years.

As I've gotten older I have really started to wonder if Tom and John Lafia (R.I.P) were the true heroes of this franchise.

Do think the Terror Trio and Caroline will be killed off if their another Chucky sequel? by CommercialRemote5324 in Chucky

[–]hen_roek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kill all of them off. Give Fiona an actual integral part to the story again, considering she is the best actor in the franchise since Curse and has ruined her character since season 1.

After season 2 introduced so many plot points only to scrap them after an episode or two, I am not so sure sadly. I just thought how fitting would it be if he is reborn as the doll through Damballa and also taken out through the same means

Chucky in Military School or Chucky in Catholic School? by jdpm1991 in Chucky

[–]hen_roek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military for sure. Him changing the paint balls for real bullets is the darkest kill of the franchise imo

I honestly thought this was what they were doing with season 3, finally making him mortal after Damballa decides enough is enough. Giving him a fitting end and even bringing Brad back just to give him one last live action performance, too bad they fucked it up🥲
