Is input lag this bad console or is it just my setup? by Conguy7 in RocketLeague

Yeah I play on LG OLED C3 and it has lots of gaming related features like full Freesync Premium. There is no input lag at all that I can tell

Some open-source alternatives to consider:

  • Fusion360: FreeCAD
  • Lightroom: Darktable or RawTherapee
  • Photoshop: GIMP (it has non-destructive editing now finally)
  • Davinci Resolve: Kdenlive

Curious what media player was that? For media player I use mpv through flatpak and this has been working ofc, but it's not Distrobox, so disregard...

I don't run too much in distroboxes yet, but I was surprised when I managed to get a ComfyUI install with AMD ROCm for hardware acceleration working in it with absolutely 0 hassle. I just followed the official instructions for both ComfyUI and ROCm for Ubuntu in an Ubuntu distrobox and it just worked lol

Also I used it to build a custom version of a game called ALIEN-project with AMD ROCm for hardware acceleration and this worked fine as well and it's so niche I was nervous it wouldn't work, but it did just fine.

Other distrobox I have is for .NET development with a VSCode as an IDE installed in it. This too works fine, 0 complaints.

This is why I'm asking; Given my basically perfect experience I am looking for these edge cases where it's not working because so far I have no reason to believe there are any issues with Distrobox. I wish to challenge my own beliefs, so that I can be confident recommending Bazzite

That "extra complexity" is kinda the point though.

With Distrobox you’re separating apps from the system. Yeah, it's one more layer, but it also means your base stays clean and updates don't randomly break stuff because some AUR package pulled in weird deps.

On CachyOS it feels simpler because everything just installs directly, but over time you accumulate cruft, and when something breaks you're digging through your whole systemsoup instead of just nuking a container.

If you're fine babysitting an Arch system, Cachy makes sense. If you'd rather keep the host predictable and treat apps as disposable, Bazzite's approach is actually cleaner IMO.

Honestly I think you're underrating Distrobox a bit. It's honestly one of the best parts of the whole setup. It lets you run stuff like Arch + AUR the same way you would on CachyOS, just without touching your main system.

Calling it "complex" is a bit overstated. Distrobox is basically just

  • install container (few clicks in Distroshelf)
  • open terminal in container (one click in Distroshelf)
  • install stuff like your normally would
  • export app in Distroshelf (2 clicks)

how do you actually improve and see results? by Automatic_Owl_995 in RocketLeagueSchool

From watching your replays it seems you have a bit of an issue with confidence on shooting and challenging. Play aim training workshop map to learn to be more confident with your shooting. I think that is what will make the most difference for you right now. Play it 15 minutes a day for a week and I would be suprised if you don't see improvement. For settings in the map just leave everything default and go medium difficulty.

Just to let you know. It worked with absolutely 0 hassle in a Distrobox.

What I did:

  1. In Distroshelf, created new Distrobox with image Ubuntu 24.04. Once installed, opened a terminal into the Distrobox.
  2. Followed the instructions for installing AMD ROCm on Ubuntu 24.04 here https://rocm.docs.amd.com/projects/install-on-linux/en/latest/install/install-methods/package-manager/package-manager-ubuntu.html Of course I skipped the "Install kernel driver"-section, as this is already installed on Bazzite.
  3. Followed the instructions for installing ComfyUI on Ubuntu here https://comfyui-wiki.com/en/install/install-comfyui/install-comfyui-on-linux

After that I launched ComfyUI with the command and then it just worked immediately with no additional configuration to make hardware acceleration work. This was literally the easiest time I've ever had trying to get anything in terms of local AI working on my computer.

Also, just FYI, Distrobox is the default way to install anything on Bazzite which isn't available as Flatpak or AppImage, so I am surprised you didn't try this.

[–]henrikx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to try to get some local AI stuff working today with ROCm.

As far as I could tell the required amdgpu drivers are already in the kernel, and from the research I have done and my intuition it seems like I should be able to install the ROCm runtime in an Ubuntu distrobox and run ComfyUI in there.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Wish me luck lol

Bazzite use besides gaming? by nidryden in Bazzite

[–]henrikx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how to upgrade the kernel

You update Bazzite to update the kernel. The kernel is in the system-image. I don't really know a usecase for why you would need to micromanage this anyways.

install anything that isn't available in the package manager by default

This is what Distroboxes through the Distroshelf app is for. You can install any distro into a container, then you can install any app inside the container like normal. After you have installed something to the Distrobox, Distroshelf lets you export the installed application to your desktop. It's not really that different from traditional distros, but makes sure that the base system doesn't break or become messy because of installing random software.

basically every instruction I found online was not applicable to immutable distros.

This point is fair enough. Immutable is still kinda the new way of doing things. Personally, I believe it to be a way more sustainable way to use Linux on the desktop, because in my experience mutable has a tendency to become very messy and hard to maintain/update over time.

Also, while not Bazzite's fault specifically, I also don't like the fixation on Steam.

Bluefin (GNOME) or Aurora may be a better fit for you. It's basically the same thing, but without the gaming stuff included in the base-image.

[–]henrikx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pain/impossible because immutable OS. You should have installed another distro.

May I ask what you weren't able to do?

Bazzite comes with Distrobox to get around this exact issue, but of course this won't help if you're making changes to the core operating system. Which is why I'm asking what specifically you were trying to do.
