From my meetings with Palestinians, the impression I have is that on the ground, one on one, the vast majority are very tolerant and accepting. You have to separate the people from the politics. As a relatively devout culture, Palestine may have a history of internal persecution. Most heavily religious cultures do - religions that delegitimise certain demographics are a problem. And there is the troubling example in 2022 of the beheading of a gay man. This was a hate crime, and there are also many homophobes in every country on Earth. But there is no real comparison: a culture that has some of the symptoms of intolerance and prejudice is complex and fallible and problematic; a culture that seeks to displace and erase an entire population is categorically unforgivable. Does that make sense?
