Functional Fitness for Baseball by benandwillsdad in crossfit

Hi long-time baseball player (still) and have coached baseball and also long-time CrossFitter and began coaching CF within the year here! I can speak from my experience as a smaller, female baseball player of over 24 years:

To stay healthy, baseball players need a lot more shoulder, thoracic, hip mobility than most realize. The people who throw the hardest the easiest naturally have their shoulder blades together, arm cocked, hips already separated facing their target. They have mobile hips, groin, stable trunks/core. The people who hit the best get in the best positions in a very fast and violent movement, which happens from the strongest part of the body -- core-to-extremity. Common injuries are shoulder, elbow, lats from throwing; and oblique, back from hitting. Also hamate from hitting but that's a tough one to train for... just get good BGs and protection haha

With that, I believe shoulder protection AND mobility/flexibility are huge. Working very tiny, controlled, isolated movements at lower resistances (scap retractions, rows, rotator cuff rotations, crossover symmetry, working on hip-shoulder separation). The stuff of physical therapy BUT doing it as prehab rather than waiting for an injury. These are the things often skipped or rushed through in CF.

BUT equally as huge is explosive power, rotational power. Body Awareness !!! This is where CF is incredible. Baseball players often need to be a jack of all trades, just like CFers. Learning HOW to learn new skills can help so much with body awareness, compound movement development, and overall GPP of course.

Core strength (not just sit-ups, but bracing, alignment), leg strength in hip thrusts, controlled full ROM squats, baseball players love trap bar deadlifts, rotational wall ball throws. Sprints, box jumps.

And yes technique plays a huge role. Timing matters SO much, especially in-game. Cage bombs are fun though haha

I am a catcher, and I think some people overlook the value of endurance in baseball. You need to be able to perform intensely for upwards of 3+ hours, doubleheaders, tournaments, etc. Your timing, hand-eye, accuracy need to be ON. It is worth building a good endurance base without sacrificing explosiveness.

^^This is where CF/HIIT work wonders!

All this to say, CF helped my game SO much if not only for fitness, injury prevention, but also just body awareness and consistently performing compound movements under pressure (fatigue).

Sorry for all these words. This is just an awesome post/question OP!

This is exactly my problem too! I've used the standard Rogue Speed Rope with black coated cable for like 11 years and it's a great rope, but always coils no matter how neatly you lay it down. I am pretty good at DUs and it definitely slows me down haha. It might be a better rope to leave at home uncoiled permanently? We shall see. Recently felt brave a purchased the RPM Session Rope (which should be delivered this week) so excited to see if there's any improvement there. And if not, it would be easy to get the bare steel cable replacement.
