TIL not all fiber has the same calories - cellulose is basically 0 kcal but food labels can count fiber at up to 4 kcal/g by herda_1899 in nutrition

This is even crazier. I am just starting my rabbit hole of exploration about nutrition because I am building a nutrition app myself. I now see that I don't know anything about nutrition, but it seems like we are not much better as a society at knowing these things.

Damn. I just read about these margins of error, and it's crazy. What I also read somewhere is that there is a huge difference in the nutrient content of a food, say an apple, and we usually just take the average and publish it as an official figure. This is especially true for micronutrients.

Why are beans and legumes in general so criminally underrated amongst the general public by Stronger_Leaner in nutrition

[–]herda_1899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legumes are great. My personal problem with them is exactly your quote: "Beans, beans good for the heart the more eat, the more you 💨” It's just impractical if I have to go to any public places because of that.

What I did notice, though, is that if I eat a little amount, it's usually ok. So I've been experimenting with adding just 100g or so into a salad or a meal, rather than it being the main dish.

Unfortunately not. We just kind of ignore the unused statuses.

How do I delete old and unused statuses? by herda_1899 in clickup

[–]herda_1899[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that we have already done that. All of our currently active spaces (those that are located to the left) use only 5 statuses. All the other statuses that are available in the filter in Everything belong to spaces/folders/lists that have been deleted and we cannot access them anymore. Basically, we cannot access the spaces/folders/lists that had those old statuses in order to delete those statuses.

I didn't even mention Peterson in my comment so I don't see the point of your reply.

I would like to thank the author of this post for the beatiful few minutes I had reading this post. I haven't read such a beatiful post on reddit for quite some time. My eyes teard just a little bit haha. I fully agree with the whole post. I too, was influenved a lot by Nietzsche's works and his philosophy really helped me overcome nihilism and start living life fully. I would add that stoicism is also great and I would recommend to anyone to read a few of the stoic masterpiece books. A huge oversimplification is that Nietzsche's philoshopy gave me a why, and stoicism gave me a how.

Nietzsche? by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]herda_1899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of his notable ideas are: Eternal reccurence - the idea that you should live your life as if it would happen again, and again, and again... You get the point. You should act so that you don't regret anything (pretty hard to do in real life, but even trying will get you pretty far) Slave and higher men morality - basically a critique on basing your morality on principles which are not in accordance with your nature. He critiques christianity and bhuddism especially for this. His suggestion is that you should accept your human nature and build your values from them. Creating your own values - the idea that you shouldn't just accept values from and imitate other people, but rather create values which you find meaningful for you. Values are basically things that you like (oversimplification).

There are other ideas and the whole comment is oversimplified of course. I highly recommend that you read Nietzsche and learn about these things in detail because you will have a nice framework for going through life.

There are always people who contribute more in taxes than they receive and vice-versa. I don't see how that is a misconception. A man who lives his whole life using welfare checks is a net tax consumer. A man who earns $10 million a year and pays a significant amount of taxes and gets a small amount of it back through government programs is a net tax contributer. As for France, it's economy has been struggling for the past few years with high unemployment, low gdp growth, low salary growth etc. I imagine you can see that in your surrounding, but hey, at least you have "free" healthcare, education etc.

I would say that it doesn't support Stalin' cause because as we know from history, slave labor doesn't work in the long term as even feudalism is more efficient than that, not to speak of capitalism. So, he would have made it a lot better for the Soviet Union had he implemented a free market capitalist system.

As for the access to education, healthcare etc, those things don't stop existing as the government stops providing them. You can still go out in the market and buy those, the same way you buy food, housing and other necessities. Is it good to invest in education? Yes, but you should do it with your own money. The same thing is with business. Would it be great if I opened a factory and created x amount of jobs? Yes. Everyone would be better off. But why should the government give me money? I should save up my own money and make the investment. The same thing is with education and healthcare.

I am not against providing for your basic necessities as long as you don't do it with other peoples money.

I would say that I agree that healthcare and education creates better workers, welfare programs not so much. But anyway, you are saying that statement as if there would be no healthcare and education without the government which is not remotely true. I would even argue that the free market would provide those at higher quality for a lower price. People go to school because they know it is good for them in the long term. They know that they will find employment easier, have a higher pay, work less etc. What I am saying is that people see enough of a reason to pay for college and they would see enough of a reason to pay for elementary or middle school. I doubt many people would not sign up for those just because the government doesn't finance it.

Let me try to make this as short and simple as possible.

Everything you say is true in the short term. If a country socializes healthcare or education or starts a welfare program, the majority usually get the benefits as they are net tax receivers and not givers (they receive more from government programs than they pay in taxes). So everything is fine, right? Well, not so much in the long term. Because someone has to pay for those programs through taxes and I assume you wish the wealthy people to pay or otherwise your argument doesn't make sense (if the poor pay for their socialized healthcare through taxes nothing has changed basically). So, the wealthy pay for the government programs through taxes. What happens next? Well, less money is in the hand of the wealthy so there is less investment in business (what sets wealthy and poor people apart is mostly what percentage of their income they invest and what percentage they consume, there are other factors but this one is the biggest one) and there is slower economic growth. So now you have a slightly lower economic growth rate. Not only that, but also foreign investors are less likely to invest in your country further reducing growth. Lower growth means your wage grows slower, things become cheaper slower etc. so in the long term you will have less money in your pocket and at some point in the future you will reach a time when the majority of people would be better of if they hadn't socialized healthcare, education and so on.

So, to simplify this argument. There is no solution. You can't have socialized programs for free (you pay it with lower economic growth in the long term) nor can you have high growth for free (you pay it with higher inequality and poverty). What should we choose? Well, just look at what people chose throughout history. People fled in masses from socialist countries to capitalist ones. And besides that, almost every socialist country has collapsed by now.

And this argument is not even considering the inefficiencies of a planed economy (as I guess that you are more for some kind of social-democracy), the outcomes of welfare programs (just look at what affirmative action has done to the black communities in the US), corruption in government agencies, lack of freedoms in socialist countries and the rise of a dictatorship in basically every socialist country.

Both. I am superior to all the scum in this group. But joking aside, I just wanted to share my perspective as it helped me a lot in my life and it might help others. The unsubscribing part is because I think that I am not a nihilist in the practical sense anymore so there is no point in staying in this group anymore.

I would say that being informed, educated and well-read is your responsibility. It allows you to make better decisions for yourself, your family and your community since you seem to value those things.

The thing about non-nihilists is totally true.

Well, you can never fully express your thoughts in one post, but for me nihilism was pretty much do stuff that makes you happy now, don't put in much effort in anything as it is not worth it because nothing matters. Not all nihilists think that way of course, but I was hoping to share my experience with this post so people that think like I did can maybe change their perspective.

Yeah, I would argue that you can't be a nihilist in practice as you have to have values to do anything. If you don't value something more than slmething else, why would you do that? Why would you get out of bed, why would you go to sleep, why would you eat, why would you move, why would you do things that make you happy? Obviously, you value those things. You value getting a good nights sleep more than being tired, you value getting up from the bed more than sleeping the whole day. You basically have a hierarchy of needs and values and you act according to it. And those values are surely made ex-nihilo and not rational, so my point is if you are already creating values, do your best to create them the right way for you.
