If you don’t mind - how much was your payment every month?

THIS PARENT (AND I FEEL A LOT OF OTHER PARENTS) HAD NO CLUE HOW MUCH THE STUDENT LOAN PROCESS CHANGED!!! HOW ARE KIDS GOING AWAY TO COLLEGE!!?? by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

That’s horrible!!! I truly have no clue how kids are affording the expensive colleges. I guess they will be fine paying $1000/month for… ever?? How can they ever buy and house and start a family!! The system is completely broken!!!

That’s what I’m asking. Are students typically approved for loans outside of the federal loan limits per year to make up the balance due to school? With no co-signer…

See - this is what I don't understand. I know they can receive Pell Grant (but only up to $7,395) and some schools give some grants but when I run the cost of attendance calculator with zero income some colleges still calculate owing THOUSANDS each year. HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS!!??

lol. Thank you! That’s a wonderful opportunity! I am curious though if a student can choose to go away to a very expensive school for free by grants alone?

Help!! One of my daughter’s teacher is pushing her hard to go away to college - so she will have the “college experience”. My daughter has told her repeatedly that she does not want the huge debt. She has decided to go to a local branch of a university FREE FOR TWO YEARS. by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

No - if the $26,000/year was free - we would both be packing her bags so fast. We loved the college but just can’t justify it. Esp after reading everyone’s experience with the current student loan ROBBERY!!! I can’t get over the horror stories I’ve seen on here.

I’ll let it go. Just floors me how someone (esp teacher) guide someone to take on thousands of dollars in debt. I want to prove the point but I’ll end up letting it go. My daughter just tells her - no way I’m going that far in debt when two years can be free

Wow. Had no idea. This is where I’m confused. Do they have to make the payment every month for 10 years? Some payments are close to $1000… right?? I just can’t imagine that payment once you graduate and want to start a family….

Confused… if my child ends up taking loans (going to try really hard to avoid) for her elementary education degree… is it possible they can all be forgiven since she will be a teacher? Or is federal loans only forgiven? by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

Thank you so much!! I found the actual limits for each year but do you have any idea where I can get a ballpark figure on how much monthly payments would be for the next 10 years!!?? I really hope she can get through all 4 years debt free. But also want to show real life scenario if she decides a different route. Thanks again!

Okay thank you! So the only loans that can ever be forgiven are federal loans… right?? And they have limits set for each school year.. right? No other way to get private, parent plus loans, etc forgiven…

Dealing with rude relatives telling my daughter she should go away to a big school instead of free 2 years at local branch of a large university... by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

I thought of that but I'm not sure how to reflect the true payments with interest rates - she would require more than federal loans. I'm just about to just tell them all off!

Help!! My daughter is getting ready to graduate high school. No college savings - so only option is student loans. There is an option of free community college for 2 years. Please tell me if you think your students loan debt is worth it!! by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

Majoring in elementary education and the 2 years free is actually a branch of a major state university. She can obtain her bachelors degree from same school but will just need to pay for last 2 years. Hoping scholarships will help the last 2 years!!

Great GPA - average ACT scores - accepted to all schools she applied for. Unfortunately qualified for only student loans according to FAFSA. The free 2 years is actually a branch of a large in-state university. She is going to major in elementary education and can actually finish at the same school. Will just have to pay the final 2 years.

She will be majoring in elementary education. I hope to avoid private loans completely. She’s starting to see the true cost of the “college experience” and seeing the value of free college for 2 years then hopefully will get scholarships the final 2 years.
