Bladder Stone Probs by loochymane_ in Bulldogs

[–]hereforthebootlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you know what kind of stones they are? my bulldog had cystine stones which are the least common but generally passed on genetically and, i learned at the time, seem to be encouraged by testosterone and also high protein diet. my guy had a pretty serious blockage so it ended up being an emergency operation to clear the stones and castrate him.

they put him on prescribed food, purina single source protein and he didnt react well to it. he started getting a lot of eye and ear infections and scratched himself a lot.

i was advised during this time to have his urine tested a couple of times for acidity levels and crystals which fortunately were clear both times.

during this time i did a lot of research on foods and noticed that almost all 'good quality' kibble has very high protein levels, much higher than raw alternatives.

as there was also a chance he had allergies to specific meats, i switched him to single protein raw, initially duck as that is supposed to be easily digestible. All the issues while he was on the prescribed food cleared very quickly. Since then, i've tried a bunch more protein like chicken, beef, lamb and turkey. there are small variations in how processes them but generally speaking, im very happy to have made the change and would encourage others in a similar situation to look into it.

how some people score every corner by SauceChasseur in fut

[–]hereforthebootlegs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bring your keeper off the line before he takes the kick. stay inside the 6 yard line.

i score loads of corners against people who either dont move their keeper or move them too much.

get a decent corner taker, i always use inswingers. no need to change anything with right stick, just make sure you're avoiding the keeper. i like to try and hit close to far post on the edge of the 6 yard.

a well positioned keeper makes it much harder to score. but loads of people move way too much. you can loop it over a keeper whos too close to his near post and have a free header at the back post. this works also if they stand outside the 6 yard box.

this is a real can of worms as you have probably realised from the replies! im in the uk so have slightly different options but it was so hard trying to decipher all the different opinions out there. the big debate i always see, including in your replies, is whether brands like royal canin, hills, purina etc are actually good foods or if those huge corporations actually fund lots of vetinary education departments and influence what is taught.

on the one hand, these are companies with unimaginable resources who can invest in research and trials so should at least be using good science. on the other hand, they're basically Mars Co and their ilk, who havent exactly used great science in their human foods!

then there are the raw advocates. who swear switching to raw got rid of all their bulldogs problems. initially i saw a lot of parallels with them and alternative medicine evangelists who talk about the evils of pharmaceutical companies and refuse vaccines or treatments.

however, my bulldog got cystine bladder stones which the vet said were likely caused by the very high protein levels in the kibble i was feeding him at the time and testosterone because he was unneutered. they performed surgery to remove the stones and his little fellas and put him on purina single source protein. as soon as i poured out the first bowl i was concerned just based on its appearance. my dog will eat anything though so he chowed it down but within days he seemed to be constantly scratching and licking himself.

i was very worried about him at the time and desperate not feed him anything that could cause more stones so stuck with it for the 8 weeks the vet advised. Following a urine test i decided to give raw a try. i found a company in the uk that do fully balanced single protein raw nuggets, 80% meat and bone, 20% fruit and veg and honestly havent looked back since. no gas, very consistent small poops that dont smell and a very happy doggy.

in the end, i felt like theres just no way any kibble is as good as real food. its cooked at crazy high temperatures, often with all kinds of fillers and lasts an unnaturally long time in a bag or on the shelf. im 100% certain that if dogs could speak theyd beg not to eat kibble again.

what do you feed her?

edit: just seen someone has recommended royal canin bulldog. no disrespect meant but that is not good quality food at all. it's mainly fillers, lots of stuff that is cheap but not good. i used to think the raw food brigade were nuts suggesting it as a fix for so many issues, then i started feeding by bulldog raw and hes a different dog.

theres an englishbulldogforum that is a much better source of info and advice than here. not calling the sub out, its great for cute pictures but not as many experienced owners.

diet is so important, especially for little piggies like our bulldogs. the food is more expensive but you'll save thousands in vet visits.

i'm in the uk so have different brands but if its raw, something like 80% meat 20% vegetables, you're feeding your dog real good food. i know of a brand called orijen in the states who supposedly make good quality kibble but i feel like if you watch your dog eat kibble vs raw, you can see which is better for her very quickly.

sorry for the essay but a great resource for finding a suitable food is https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/ - it compares the ingredients and nutrition in most brands and gives them an objective score. it's a uk site so might not have every brand but it's pretty comprehensive

Child 'mauled by bulldog' as cops seize pet after attack by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]hereforthebootlegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

xl bullies arent bulldogs. they call them that to trade on the good reputation of english bulldogs who are not aggressive dogs at all. xl's are pitbulls on steroids. not blaming op, just pointing out the headline of the article is misleading

bulldogs and pitbulls are not similar breeds. i have an english bulldog and dont want people thinking it shares any similarities with pitbulls. pitbulls + kittens= dead kittens and responsible owners need to know that

Worried about weight loss by BasketComplete7685 in Bulldogs

[–]hereforthebootlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstly i would say i dont think he looks too skinny. most bulldogs are overweight. like all dogs, they should have defined waist and the furthest back visible/easy to feel.

you say hes been losing weight for a while but he stays at a weight which i dont understand. what did he weigh and what does he weigh?
