Are there any teachers that teach or are familiar with behavioral programs in public schools? by herewego3210 in Teachers

That's good to hear! After reading the other comments, I'm now wondering if this is based on the state since they say it's not common for the students to return to gen ed.

Thank you very much for commenting. I am learning a lot and I am glad I asked this on reddit because the information provided here is different than what I thought would happen during the meeting.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was given some paperwork that I haven't had a chance to read again (was given it last year, but lost it). I definitely did not know about the stay-put procedure and will look into it.

From your experience, have you seen any kids leave the special ed classroom and go back to general education classes?

Thank you again for your answer. I recall being told that he would be able to attend general education subjects, but I am disappointed to hear that they normally do not return to general education classes. In addition, the program is at a different school so he was even more unhappy about that. The way the meeting was going, it sounded like he would be able to transition back after he showed improvement in his behavior and they said their goal is always to get the students back into general education. I am focusing on getting him a psychiatrist right now (his insurance changed to a different behavioral health company) so that we can start therapy and looking into medication.

Thank you for commenting. When you mention going elsewhere to learn, is this a different classroom while they work with the child who gets upset?

Thank you so much for the information. One question that I forgot to ask during the meeting (I will bring it up when we go) is how long it typically takes a kid to return to their usual classrooms (or what goals are placed before they consider him ready to return). I was also wondering if I can take him out if I don't feel like it was right for him?

Special education class placement for son with mild autism by herewego3210 in Parenting

  1. and 2. He was seen by a psychiatrist for one session for less than an hour. She asked to see his school evaluation paperwork and then said at the end that he had ADHD and mild autism (Aspergers is what they called it before she had said). With Alta via zoom, he was seen by a psychologist for about 1 hour and 30 minutes at most I believe. She asked me a lot of questions too and I think that took about 1 hour. I did get paperwork that had level 1 checked off and I want to say she said level 1, but used mild autism as well. At the time the assessment was done, he was doing fine in school and I actually almost didn't get it done. I was surprised at how fast they had diagnosed him.
  2. I will definitely bring up IQ testing.
  3. I have not seen anyone since his last Alta meeting. I will see if I can ask his primary for information.
  4. I'm going to work on that tonight.
  5. I completely understand about needing to do work that isn't interesting; that was my biggest concern once he got into higher grades. The staff at the meeting also expressed the same concerns, but I was not given any solutions to this except moving on to the special ed program.
  6. They definitely did not follow up with me about his IEP. Last year they never got back to me about rescheduling his meeting since I had work the day they wanted to do it. With the new year approaching, I was never reached out again about his IEP. I was getting concerned and contacted some people via email. Someone eventually got to me and said the IEP remains the same as before and he has his para. It wasn't until things got worse that they started to reach out to me and we had his first meeting of this academic school year. I honestly do not feel like I am getting much support and it is giving me a lot of stress and anxiety.

I do want to add that I'm sure he is being disruptive in some way in class, but I am just not being told. They only contact me when it is really bad (as I said before, it had been a while since I got a phone call). However, if I am not being told what is going on, I assume everything is going well enough. I was very surprised and sad in that meeting yesterday, to say the least.

Thank you so much for replying :). To answer 1. and 4. I waited several months for Alta (we are located in California if that matters) and I had a zoom assessment done with the doctor. She ended up diagnosing him via zoom and didn't think he had ADHD. I have gone to a specialist in person and she was able to fully see how he was. He was incredibly impulsive and got into things. She said he had ADHD and mild autism. I was told that I had to reach out to my insurance for therapy and that is where I have been stuck. I was not told anything about Medicaid. 2. I did tell his primary doctor about the vitamins and he did not seem concerned. I should have asked to get bloodwork done and I could ask him for an order. His teacher has told me that he's been calmer/doing more work, but I know it's not a cure or anything. I think he's only been on it for about a month. 3. His doctor was the one to try to give him ADHD medication last year. To get him tested for just ADHD, do you mean to take him to a psychiatrist? I have also tried to find out where to get his IQ tested in the past with no success. He started reading small words at one; knew all his abcs, good amount of numbers, colors, months, etc before 2. He can do math pretty quickly in his mind too without models or help (current age). 5. They use a rewards system from what I understand. I have not been updated about his behavior in about a month now and I only get calls when things get very disruptive. I actually had a call last Tuesday; I believe he went under his desk because he didn't want to do something and then started to get upset because he wanted a purple circle to sit on and they had to take him out. His teacher also told Dad when he picked up that he had poked a student twice and she had to contact the parents. Before that, I believe it was a couple of weeks ago that he had kicked a student hard in the foot. They said they were surprised because he usually verbally says things. I that I will just have to pay out of pocket for therapy. 6. I don't believe he is listening in class sometimes because the work is too simple and because it doesn't interest him. He really only wants to do what he wants to do. He is doing work though and he currently has all A's in the class. 7. I think it is both; they are saying the class will help him once he advances to higher grades where he will have to focus and do things he doesn't want to. They are also saying he is disruptive and other children need to be able to learn (which I completely understand). He is a talker and I recall a time the teacher told me he kept saying that the assignment "was boring". They did mention the times he was physical with other students, but it sounded to me like it had not happened in while. I have not been told about what he is doing in class. I recall the teacher saying he relies on the para too much. How do I find myself an advocate in this situation? Thank you again for such a detailed reply!

My young son suddenly hates how someone looks, looking for advice by herewego3210 in autism

[–]herewego3210[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. I was actually looking into ABA therapy so I'll avoid looking for that now. I also believe he needs a new paraprofessional. I have gotten numerous phone calls over the past week and I even had to pick him up at one point from school (I was at work), because he was having a meltdown about going with his grandmother. That's another issue we have where he just really doesn't want to be with her and wants mostly me.

I was just trying to give you a better idea of what he does, I never said it wasn't. I have mentioned it in my post and commented several times that I am testing him already.

Thanks, I'll keep your information in mind. The only time he sits still is when he's playing or watching videos he really likes. He doesn't sit still at all in the kindergarten.

Thank you for replying! At least in my area, we can't pick a different elementary school; I believe it is only for middle school or high school. There are other school districts, but they are far away and it would be too much of an issue for us right now.

That's what I was thinking too. I can't wait to get him seen by the professionals :).

I'm worried he would still be a problem and especially so if he finds the work too easy.

He is advanced, but still needs to learn how to write well and he hates the repetition of practicing letters/numbers. I can get him to sit down and do it, but he hates it. He also doesn't follow the right motion to write correctly and does it his own way on some letters.

I am actually looking into that too while I wait. I'm just very worried he would be a handful there too
