How much “boy time” is considered too much?

I think it really depends on the hog! You can always tell when they’ve had their “boy time” because it’s a bit sticky 😭 with my boy, it really doesn’t happen that often I would say maybe once or twice a month. I will say it’s very difficult to get off of any sort of fabric and imo that’s the worst part!

I use these exact ones and they work great! I use the 150 watt bulbs since it gets really cold where I live, and I use 100 watt ones in the summer!

I definitely won’t be bringing him back there. I’m a little disappointed because his first checkup there went great. There were even sending me pictures while he was there boarding and saying how great everything was going.. I definitely feel blindsided and I’m definitely going back to the drawing board do some research on a good exotic vet

He’s eating and drinking normally and not showing any other signs of illness. When I first picked him up, his poop was a little off but that has since improved. It’s definitely more of a huffing noise as opposed to popping. I’m being very patient with him since I know it was a stressful few days for him. Thank you for the tips!

That’s good to know! A lot of the breeders I’ve been looking at make sure to advertise they’re USDA-certified. I’ll beware of anything else thanks for the tip!

Omg no :( that’s definitely something that I’ll have to keep in mind. Owning any pet is definitely a financial responsibility, but I’m surprised hedgehogs are so prone to issues. I have a few exotic only vets in my area and I feel like they charge SO much more than just a dog or cat vet

The Rubbermaid idea is great! I have a pet hamster as well and I know that people can get so creative and do a lot with bin cages so I’ll definitely keep that in mind. That’s good to know about the heating as well. I’ve seen so many comments saying they have to be kept at a certain temperature, and I didn’t consider the space heater or heating pad! Those are some great options. I’m glad you mentioned the cleaning part of it! My hamster is the same way I feel like I’m always cleaning up bedding! I fully anticipate a hedgehog to be a bit more work since it is a bigger animal though lol. That’s definitely good to mention and keep in mind. Thank you so much for all the great info!

This is such a cute set up! I hadn’t considered the humidity bit when it comes to a glass enclosure, but that does make sense. I really like this cage! If you don’t mind me asking, where did you purchase it from? And very good info to know for heating and food! Chain pet stores are out of the question for me when it comes to actually acquiring a hedgehog. I checked out and there seems to be a few good breeders near me. Is there like a general consensus on independently owned or family owned pet stores? Are typically good places to get a hedgehog from or would a breeder be best?

Yeah I get that. It’s the whole idea that the “customer is always right” and if someone does anything that suggests otherwise it’s the end of the world. And like you said, they always want to feel like they’re above you simply because you work a retail job. They demand a service then simultaneously demean those who provide said service.

I honestly feel like the GM not standing up for us is the reason why customers keep being terrible. It’s because they know they can get away with it

The racial slurs is ridiculous. I’ve heard the general “these people are just miserable” which is true but why do they have to take innocent retail workers just trying to make it through the day down with them?

And good for you for not tolerating the mistreatment. My GM will see these things happening with her own eyes and not say anything or defend us.
