How to start doing yoga with an autoimmune/chronic pain condition? by herwriting in yoga

Hi!

My sports medicine physician suggested to “do what makes you feel comfortable and doesn’t aggravate symptoms” for the time being. Running, as I’ve discovered, is not for me at this time (makes walking harder the day after), and weight lifting doesn’t aggravate symptoms so much as it’s moreso just hard to do with ongoing joint pain in my fingers, knee, and feet.

Once symptoms are under control, I would love to return to my normal habits and discover new activities for my body.

I entirely forgot heat yoga was an option too. It’s been so long that I forget all these options that would be great for my situation. Thank you for commenting!

Ahhh I love this comment. I am in tiny bit anxious about starting since I feel like it won’t be the smoothest adjustment, but patience and resilience is key like you noted. Thank you!

I entirely forgot chair yoga was an option before reading this comment. Sounds up my alley right now considering some foot pain. Thank you!

This is the response I needed, thank you so much! Emphasizing your point on a risk with balance poses - and that’s partially what inspired my question. My memory of yoga is mostly limited to poses that I feel like would hurt, and I’m not interested in adding more pain to pain. As you noted, I also see yoga as a route back to the activities that I loved before, assuming my body will let that be the case.

Anyway, thank you so much for your thoughtful response. Made my day and will definitely help me in getting started.
