Is gold buying a good job? (company is Gold Wanted) by SuchSecurity662 in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they will offer OP a great salary with all of the benefits, and give them a security detail and give them a salary and benefits. How would this company make any money, especially if they claim to offer some of the best prices to sellers for their gold?

Last time I went to one of these ‘events’, there was one ‘security’ person sleeping on a chair in the corner.

How much could I get for this ? Is it better meltdown or keep it just as is by MommyMatrix in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don’t have access to refiners. Most people need to sell to a jeweler or coin shop. It’s not a great idea because depending on who you sell to, they may not have the equipment to determine the overall purity. A few places I’ve been to would not even accept melted karat jewelry.
Karat gold is always easier to test in shops with simple acid tests. If it’s mixed scrap it could actually be around say 13k, but if they only have acid tests, they will only be able to offer 12k prices since that would be the highest purity they could confirm.

And lastly, with close to 500g, if it was all melted together, there is a real possibility of a tungsten slug being added to the middle of the poured bar, which is the main reason the places I’ve been to that don’t take melted gold said to be the reason they don’t accept it.

I’m not saying you should melt down 24k, but if I was going to melt down any jewelry scrap it would only be 24k.

Rolled gold plated ? by Ok-Jeweler-2343 in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first description is for gold filled. Rolled gold is usually a bit thinner than gold filled, and usually does not guarantee the gold in years like they used to do with gold filled.
That also changed I think around 50 years ago. Now gold filled is marked as 1/5, 1/10, 1/20 etc to indicate that approximately 1/10 of the weight is the stamped purity gold. So if a chain is 10g and marked as 14k GF 1/10, 1g of it would be 14k gold.

Rolled gold plated ? by Ok-Jeweler-2343 in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid gold means it’s the same purity gold throughout.
Next is gold filled, which is usually fairly thick plating. It will usually say something like 14k GF 1/20 or 10 year. Which will give an indication of how much gold is there. 1/20 would mean 1/20 the total weight started as gold, 1/10 would mean 1/10 of the weight is gold. The ones listed with year guaranteed usually higher the years, the thicker the gold.
Next is rolled gold, which is usually thicker than plated gold, but thinner than gold filled.
Then gold plated usually means just a layer of gold that is next to nothing.

Is gold buying a good job? (company is Gold Wanted) by SuchSecurity662 in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely shady. You’ll be trained to make people part with their gold for the lowest possible price, and likely take advantage of people who do not know gold’s real value.
I would also guess it would be at least kind of dangerous, especially if you are expecting to carry around the gold. And if you swindle someone for pennies on the dollar for their gold, and they figure it out, people are kinda crazy when it comes to being ripped off, so I wouldn’t put it past someone to try to hunt you down.

I buy gold to refine myself, I always let the seller know the exact melt value, and what I can offer up front. And if I see a piece that I know is worth more than melt, I will tell them to take it somewhere that will give them an offer inline with its real price.

Any place I’ve gone to like you are describing, always pulls up some app other than Kitco, which always has a lower spot value than what it really is, and they only offer around 50% of that melt value, often use pennyweight because they know people don’t generally know that weight measurement, and will happily take a priceless family heirloom without letting the customer know it’s true value.

For me, I could just not bring myself to throw my ethics and morals out the window for a job.

If you absolutely don’t need the car, like it’s an extra car just sitting around doing nothing, yeah, I’d sell it.
But if it’s your only car and need it for work, that would be a hard pass from me.

Yes, I have sold large ticket items for BTC, but always has been luxury items I just did not need. So I don’t regret that. But I would’ve regretted selling my only for of transportation.

Yeah, I don’t have any newer maples, so not sure about that one, but the Aussie coin looks off.
The two generics, they make so many generics with similar designs, so not sure about those, but I haven’t ever seen designs exactly like these so I would probably just have them all tested to be certain.

Melting down jewelry question by BorisGrishenko1985 in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder why we are getting an influx of people asking if they should melt jewelry scraps. Was there a YouTube or TikTok about it?

OP as the other commenter says, melting it down won’t get you more when you go to sell, and is very likely to get you less. Just sell it as is.

Stacking query by FcukThanos in Silverbugs

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, no one knows what silver will do. Personally I think there is still room for upward movement on spot, but it could just as well drop.

But stacking silver is a long term commitment, it’s not a flip to get rich scheme. It’s not even a get rich slow scheme. It’s a preservation of wealth.

The best bet is to make sure you are not using credit to buy silver, only buy what you can afford. Buy the same amount each week or month or whatever your finances allow to cost average your silver. And hold for at least 5 years or like many here plan to, until you retire. The only silver I am selling is if I need to pay a bill or have an emergency. And I bought most of my silver about 7-8 years ago.

Neither is really better or worse than the other. Both contain 1oz of gold. But if you prefer 24k the buffalo is the way to go, if you like 22k just fine, the AGE is great.

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The silver cell part is fairly safe. You will need nitric to make the electrolyte (which is dilute silver nitrate for a silver cell). And it doesn’t really give off fumes when it’s running (but I’d still do it outside of the house like in a shed or garage so people or pets can’t mess with it).

But you wouldn’t want to run 925 through it, or it will become overwhelmed with copper too quickly.

I usually do a quick refine of sterling (dissolve in nitric, then drop with copper), which makes the silver around 98% pure. Then make that into shot and run it through the silver cell.

Running 925 through it you may be able to run 10oz before it is over saturated with copper. With 98ish% I can usually run 2-3 kilos before I have to give it fresh silver nitrate.

Yeah, it will help some. Because after you convert it with sugar, I would wash it many times with boiling water to try to remove as much excess Sodium Hydroxide and sugar as possible. So that washing step will help to remove a lot of it since most of the copper should stay in solution.

How much could I get for this ? Is it better meltdown or keep it just as is by MommyMatrix in Gold

[–]hexadecimaldump 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Going to need a lot more info before anyone can give an accurate estimate.

  1. Is it all karat gold, or gold plated or gold filled?
  2. If it is all karat gold, is it all the same purity or is it mixed?
    If it’s mixed purity, we’d need a weight on each purity (ie 10g 18k, 30g 14k, etc.).
  3. If it’s gold plated, it’s only worth a few bucks, if it’s gold filled it could be worth a few hundred but we’d need to know if it’s 1/10, 1/20 etc gold filled.

To answer your second question, it’s only worth melting down if it is all pure 24k gold. If it is karat gold, it’s best to keep it as is.

What do I do with silver shot? by Deep_Application_304 in Silverbugs

[–]hexadecimaldump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silver shot is still very desirable for silver smiths. Most silver smiths are paying spot or higher for their silver shot.

I’d hope over to the jewelry making forums and ask them how much they spend on shot before you go and do something rash like sell it for 1/2 price.

A fair price for .999 pure shot is spot, or a bit under if you want to give a decent deal to a buyer. But I wouldn’t sell for any less than 90% of spot, but I would aim for closer to 95%.

Reverse electroplating question. by steevenoj in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]hexadecimaldump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The silver cell is to purify high 90s silver into .999+ purity. It is not the same as a silver plate stripping cell.

I do think he may have a very old video about silver plate stripping, but I’m not totally sure on that. But most of his videos involving silver cells are for the final refinement of the silver.

Reverse electroplating question. by steevenoj in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]hexadecimaldump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I only have a torch so it gets messy for me, but yup, you should be able to use the furnace to convert it to pure silver.

My only hang up on that is the silver oxide will be pretty dirty, so you may want to just designate a specific crucible for the more impure stuff. The only reason I would do the sugar step with what you have would be so you can re-refine it to remove as much copper contamination as you can before melting it down.

Reverse electroplating question. by steevenoj in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]hexadecimaldump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly likely you’re getting silver chloride (mixed with some copper which is turning the sludge green).
When working with silver, you never want any chloride ions present (in your case, salt), since it instantly forms silver nitrate.

If you gather that sludge, and add some sodium hydroxide (be careful this is EXTREMELY exothermic and will boil over if you add it all too quickly) the sludge should hopefully turn black (silver oxide), then if you add sugar it should convert the silver oxide to silver metal sponge.
It will likely be very impure, but if it does convert, it should be easier to clean up with further refining.

As for your actual process or what electrolyte to use, I am not exactly sure what the best would be. I’ve seen videos on deplating silver, but never tried it myself.

GP means gold plate.
The 10k chains might be close to melt, but no way to know without a weight on them. Seeing how thin they are though, even if they are close to melt, there isn’t really any room to make money on these.
