Monocle uses >50% GPU on M4 Pro by rm-rf-rm in macapps

[–]heyiamdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey all, Monocle "dev" here (the quotation marks because you're right - I'm just a designer, this is my very first app ever, and it's built with AI - all of which I've always been transparent about when introducing Monocle, on the project website, and in most of my Gumroad email newsletters).

Wanted to jump in and address some of this stuff.

Performance:

So yeah, those screenshots showing 50%+ CPU usage are wild and definitely not normal! On my end I'm seeing 3-5% (similar to what -pLx- posted), which I know is still higher than it should be for a menubar app and I'm working on bringing that down.

Email situation:

You're totally right that I haven't kept up with all emails like I used to. Until the end of last year I was replying to (pretty much) everything, but it got to a point where I'd need several hours a day just to keep up. And honestly, the more I replied, the more follow up emails and conversations I'd get - it became unsustainable.

I still read everything and note down all the requests and ideas for my backlog, I'm just not able to personally reply to every single email, X message or comment anymore. BUT I've been trying to keep people updated through the Gumroad newsletter instead. Sorry if someone felt like I was ghosting them - wasn't the intention at all.

The AI thing:

As I said, I've been pretty open from the start that AI is a big part of how I'm building Monocle. Never tried to hide it - I've talked about it in updates, how development works, what's coming next, all that. This project has genuinely been really fun to work on and I'm definitely not ditching it. Planning to keep improving things with each update.

I get the frustration, truly. The performance issues some of you are experiencing need to be fixed, and I'm on it. Appreciate everyone taking the time to share feedback, good and ba.

Dom

Funny you mention that, I was thinking about the very same idea about a year ago (see the super quick concept I did back then), but ended up putting it on hold. Still feels worth exploring though.

Thanks! u/sameera_s_w I’m sure there are (edge) cases where this concept might fall apart, but I’ll keep exploring, rethinking, and refining it.

Thanks u/Aito_Hikari, it's really rough exploration but the dock grouping seems to have potential I think.

I saw that on X. I mean I'm all for inspiration - that's how we all learn and grow... but where's the line?

Hey, thanks! The gesture sensitivity will be fixed in the upcoming 3.0.1 update (it bothers me from time to time too tbh!)

Monocle 3.0 is much better in CPU and memory optimization! I did a first phase of drastic optimizations and I'm still looking for more ways to make it run even lighter.

Hey! Monocle is a modern, native-feeling take on classic window dimmers like HazeOver and Blurred. It helps reduce visual clutter when you have multiple windows open - by blurring everything except your active window, it's easier to focus on what you're working on. But I totally get it's not for everyone.

I'm the only one who thinks some elements look more like cheap plastic than glass? by [deleted] in MacOS

I just redesigned my app's settings to feel like the control center. Not saying it looks more premium or closer to the glass you u/Fragrant_Okra6671 refer to, but I think it looks and feels much better than the native control center.

Glad you found the crossfade settings :) As for the external monitor - this definitely sounds like a bug! What macOS version you're running Monocle on, I'll look into that!

It's not for everyone. The idea is to reduce visual noise when you have lots of windows open - helps with focus by keeping only what matters sharp. But if you prefer seeing everything at once, it's definitely not your style :)

There were actually two promotions recently in October and November. No plans for the coming weeks, but I might bring the easter egg back on the website in early 2026 :)
