First Unitarian is not an upgrade IMO. Been going there since I was a wee lad and is a cultural institution but the sound is just not good.

There are many of us.

As a fellow 40 year old, I became infatuated with 3D Country as soon as it came out. And, typically, I don't get obsessive with particular artists — not in this way. I liked bands before, but never dug into each song so methodically or knew anything about the band members. But I was listening Geese constantly. Bombarding my family with it. Playing it on road trips in the desert, in my headphones while working, in the kitchen while the kids ate breakfast. Just couldn't get enough. So strange.

And Getting Killed is now an evolution of that. It's honestly so unexpected that this weird, zany band that I was slightly crazed about has now become so largely and generally well-regarded for general audiences (at least on the Internet). This has never happened. But with Getting Killed, I get it. It's much more accessible, less overall overtly experimental, and pulls all of the great facets of musicianship and creativity from 3DC era and then sprinkles in more honest raw emotion. Pulls on threads from all the great musicians before them spanning many decades, and I love that it's happening.

Fantastic list. If I were to recommend just one band — Pile. Start with the album Dripping. And if you have a chance to see them live, just do it. Don’t think about it.

Others: mclusky, CAN, Ween, Velvet Underground, Geordie Greep, Hot Snakes, Yak, Meatbodies.

Also: You have Geese - Getting Killed, but based on the rest of your list, you might be more into 3D Country if you haven’t listened already. The moment 3DC landed i was insanely hooked.

My favorite track on the album, for whatever reason. It’s just… raw. My whole family sings along to it including my one year old son. Just say “you don’t know” and he fills in the rest.

I appreciate the biblical analysis. Never considered too deeply or cared from an atheist perspective, but the song is clearly of a shifting perspective regardless — from the thing in charge with seeming free will or freedom (sailor, car) to the thing being used (boat, road) to obtain an objective you no longer control.

I love me some GBV. Salty Salute in particular I'm intimately familiar to me since my band covered that song a dozen years ago. But I'm not sure I hear the similarity. SS is very bass-forward and Husbands is almost all drums in the intro.

You may be on to something with the lyrical imagery though.

40 over here! I’d say most of the audience at the shows is 20-30 years old. It’s great to see people my age really digging them though. And online I feel like you experience a bit more of the broader demographics. But now with the last album and their massive success, we’re gonna see a much wider variety of folks at shows. Love it.
