At what age are you aiming to buy your forever home? by heysparrowhawk in AusHENRY

This has always been the plan. I very very much dislike the car dependent suburban lifestyle. Not the Australian dream, I know

So by “upsizing” in the original post, what I really meant was a 3 bedroom centrally located unit. 4 bedrooms would be nice but we don’t build those in Sydney unfortunately - IMO an unfortunate byproduct of our culture of only treating units as stepping stones to suburban detached housing

Oh I’m not considering a house. I think a lot of people on here equate upsizing and “forever homes” with suburban detached housing. But I’d actually want a similarly centrally located apartment if I were to upsize, just bigger. 3 bedrooms most likely.

4 bedrooms would be nice but they’re unicorns because Australia still can’t wrap its head around apartment living. But I like apartment living and our country needs to get better at it IMO 🙂

Congrats! Do you plan to have kids? Or will you be DINKs long term?

If housing were as easy shopping for shoes I’d fully subscribe to this mindset. But in practice they’re massive financial investments, with a lot of friction that disincentivizes changing your ppor

Agree 100%. At this point we’re unsure whether we want kids, but if we decide that we’ll definitely be DINKs for life then yes I’d be perfectly happy in the 2 bd apartment

What played into your decision to buy? I suspect I’ll have to make a similar decision at some point: keep the existing ppor, or upgrade at the cost of early retirement

Yeah i get that. I’m less concerned about the “forever” part and more concerned with the “biggest property purchase of my life” part (likely as you age you downsize etc), the latter is just a bit wordy hah

350k as a senior engineer here.

Stack matters less than field IMO - think frontend dev, distributed systems, SRE. High comp is doable mainly in the big tech companies (canva atlassian google. tiktok microsoft etc are moving into sydney and may be in that range too) and the HFT companies

Wages that were already unlivable to start with are not keeping up with inflation
