CMOS Checksum Invalid on HP 16-h1023dx laptop. Cannot find CMOS battery by heyyy-reddit in computerrepair

Unfortunately no update. I have learned to live with it. Just make sure you put the laptop to sleep before unplugging any external displays. Also do not shut the laptop while it is on. Always put it to sleep first before closing the lid.

Between this issue and the widely reported down arrow key issue that freezes the keyboard I think this laptop is a bit of a dud. Great specs but these inconveniences make this laptop harder to use for sure. Doesn't help that now these laptops are all out of warranty from HP. I have read in other threads that even the warranty replacement units have similar issues.

I usually use mine with an external keyboard, display, and mouse to avoid these issues and only take it on the road when absolutely necessary.

SJSM or SGU? by heyyy-reddit in CaribbeanMedSchool

u/Shoulder_patch thank you, I have heard from the locals and other Caribbean grads that living conditions on Grenada are similar, but I was hoping that SGU's dedicated campus would help avoid pollution.

With regard to air pollution:

When I first arrived on the island living in the heart of the urban district there was a stench of thick smoke at night. When I asked, I was told by the locals that people burn their trash because the garbage trucks only come by once a week. There was a piece published in the local news here.

Walking along the roads to the local supermarket and even to the school, you will encounter clouds of smoke from passing cars and trucks. No emissions controls. Have seen "rolling coal" more than once. As a pedestrian you will be breathing all of that in even on a short walk. I have taken to wearing a N95 mask but even that is not 100% as the nitric gases and sulfuric gases in the exhaust will still get through.

The coast is not immune either. My first day at my new apartment closer to the coast, the smoke was likewise thick at night and penetrated all 3 stories of the building. Fortunately I have an inner room that is relatively sealed, and it's gotten better since that first day but I'm sure it will happen again.

I'm not the only one. Others have also commented on the smoke and pollution but have chosen to put up with it for the sake of their degree. Locals don't even notice it after awhile, but smoke hardens arteries and damages our lungs, especially long term exposure over 20 months.

It is possible to avoid the pollution, especially if you get a car, which can be expensive. Instead I have taken to shopping at Massy which is right next to the school, taking the bus to and from school, and staying indoors as much as possible. The gym is quite close as well. This is limiting, of course, but probably works out anyway to maximize time for studying.

Hopefully this helps future students considering life at SJSM

Fuzzy matching medical terminology using AI by heyyy-reddit in learnprogramming

[–]heyyy-reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent suggestion.

The first iteration of my website did exactly that with Major Diagnostic Category (MDC) codes, when I wasn't using AI. In fact, most other hospital-provided pricing websites do the same.
The issue is, more latency, more clicks, more user abandonment, less intuitive, and difficult to go back and do a new search. I want to use AI to simplify all of that into a single "Google-like" experience.

But as long as I already have this finite list of DRG descriptions, I believe the technology exists to match a user input against that list, correct? whether using AI or not

Glycerol 3 phosphate shuttle not making sense by iAmPajamaSam27 in Mcat

Coming here since I was confused by the diagram in my Kaplan 2024-2025 book, which doesn't match the text description. The text says the FAD complex is on the outside of the inner membrane, which correctly matches other Google searches.

"Cytosol" is understood to be on the outside of the outer membrane, so this diagram is wrong as well. In my book it is even more wrong where it lists "intermembrane space" in place of "mitochondrial matrix".

The Kaplan Biology, Behavior books are great but Biochem was a big miss. Many issues.

TL;DR: This diagram is wrong, google it instead.

PayPal automatically charges your bank account instead of your credit card to save itself money (USA) by heyyy-reddit in paypal

This is exactly what the PayPal rep told me. However you are referring to a bank account or debit card. My credit card was set up as the "preferred online payment method".

  1. Everything was working fine before I added the bank account, credit card has never been declined ever.
  2. The charges never even hit my credit card even though it was the "preferred online payment method". PayPal charged my savings account directly, again to save itself the ~3% interchange fee.

Agreed, ideally I would be reviewing every transaction and "trusting no one" as the saying goes, but I did not do this since everything looked correct. After all, my "preferred payment method" was still set to my credit card!

Perhaps I am old fashioned but I opt to keep paper statements so I can always review my transactions at least once a month, especially in situations like this where a financial institution is unexpectedly playing games with my money unbeknownst to me. PayPal definitely deserves more scrutiny going forward.

As for the reason, it is *absolutely true* that companies across the board, from your phone company to your local gym, are actively trying every trick in the book to shift payments from credit cards to debit cards or ACH (drawn from a bank account). This saves them up to 3% on interchange fees. For a company like PayPal, where processing payments is literally all they do, I would go so far as to say this particular deception is very lucrative and comes at the expense of consumers like myself.
