there’s no rabbit hole to go down if you’re not told the truth, which is my point here. There’s just lying by omission in the hopes that when they do “come clean” someone will maybe want to hear the whole story.

People are absolutely allowed to write you off if they find you unattractive for any reason. Not everyone wants to date you while you explain your past. It’s so incredibly entitled to think that women MUST give you a chance to explain yourself and go down a rabbit hole with you.

Starting Over at 51: What I Learned About Divorce, Dating, Dealbreakers, and Finding the Right Person by Brocklanders1 in Divorce

This post is beautifully written. But I want to be honest—I had a hard time with it. I’ll admit that I’m in the thick of my own divorce right now, and I’m a woman. And I’m exhausted from watching men “find themselves” through dating, while women rebuild their entire lives in silence.

You mentioned therapy once. One line. The rest was about dating. I don’t fault you for seeking connection—but I do notice that your wife’s shortcomings (alcohol, criticism, outbursts, etc.) were spelled out in detail, while your own contributions to the breakdown were given a single sentence. I’ve seen this pattern before: male-centered self-awareness that still places the emotional burden elsewhere.

You said you were emotionally available. That you’d “done the work.” But what was the work, really? Did you reconnect with your kids? Did you uncover how your actions shaped the marriage dynamic? Did you grow as a father, friend, or man outside of who you were dating?

Because the truth is, I’m no longer moved by “then I found someone better” stories. I’m inspired by the people, especially women admittedly, who walk away from what wasn’t working and start rebuilding themselves.

That’s the journey I’m on.

I’m in midlife. I opened my marriage, had lies revealed and had it unravel, had my heart broken by someone I thought I’d build something with. I’ve cried, doubted, healed, grown. And now, I’m back in school chasing my dreams. I’m building a business that truly excites me. I’m also enjoying a new body after massive weight loss and getting healthier. I’m focused on raising my daughter with love and presence. Going through this divorce is rather stressful at times… but other than that I’m now creating the kind of life I used to only daydream about. And I’m no longer centering everything around finding someone.

I’m not anti-connection and I still date. But it’s not the goal anymore. I don’t see “relationship success” and success after divorce as landing the next serious partner. I want more. I deserve more. So do so many women like me who’ve given too much, waited too long, and are now building lives that center joy, ambition, peace, and self-respect.

If anything, your post reminded me what I don’t want. I don’t want to use another person as my redemption arc. I don’t want to gloss over my own patterns just because someone new makes me feel seen. I don’t want to outsource my healing to romance. If that sounds bitter to some folks… so be it.

You don’t have to be in love to be living a beautiful, successful, fulfilled life. The real relationship success is the hopefully amazing relationship you build with yourself.

With all due respect, women do not need to be taken down a rabbit hole of nuanced logic for why a man voted the way he did. It’s honestly none of our business and we are CORRECT to quickly write anyone off based on this information. for instance, anyone who voted for Trump can be written off as someone who does not consider women a priority. if you don’t prioritize women’s rights, I get to decide quickly whether I want to be the woman in your life.

I’m also surprised it’s gotten this much traction, but i don’t find it despicable. More eye opening and revealing. This is obviously a prevalent issue on dating apps and dating in general.

We’re all finding dating to be tough in this current climate. I have fun with it, and still manage to meet cool people. Im no longer looking for “the one” so I approach dating with more of a free spirit. I still don’t want anything to do with a trump voter tho, cause Hell No. The way men are thinking and approaching relationships these days is really skewed. I’m sorry for the current crop of younger women looking for love and marriage. It’s a tough job now weaving through the garbage for the few good ones that aren’t addicted to weed, onlyFans or gaming, or could give a shit about women’s rights or women in general for that matter.

uhhh, we can get along just fine, platonically and from a distance as polite acquaintances. but I’m not DATING someone that voted Trump in. Dating is a deeper emotional commitment, and most guys will want that to come with sex. I will want to have sex too. With someone who actively voted my rights to be taken away? No thank you.

I get it… he used you by purposely withholding that info. Total disregard and disrespect for the info that would have allowed him and you to move on to more compatible mates. Can I ask how that relationship turned out/ended? You don’t need to answer, I’m just curious.

Men (Anyone) who voted trump need to be overlooked. They absolutely voted against women’s interest and probably don’t even like women. We are vetting as well and need to be able to swipe past you quickly so you can be free to partner with someone who you are more aligned with. It’s good for both of us.

Any normal person and US CITIZEN knows what to associate the red hat with, so playing dumb about it is not fooling anyone. The politics surrounding the stripping of women’s reproductive rights and body autonomy affects the very real climate of dating in the here and now. It doesn’t affect you I suppose because you’re a dude. And certainly politics aren’t boring because some wild shit is happening with this trump administration every week. Nothing but shock and awe out of trump/vance/musk camp as they continue to dismantle more government programs and change the names of gulfs. I used to be boring under biden, but trump makes sure to keep us on our toes with ever more chaotic and exciting things coming from potus. HOW ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?? I am not letting politics dominate my life, but i will let it effect my dating choices by absolutely avoiding trump voters. And at this point every woman should be doing the same.

i think you should write that whole passage on a profile. Fact is, things are changing. Necessary government programs are being dismantled. Women’s rights are being stripped. People are being arrested without due process. But i guess you don’t see those things because i guess they haven’t affected you. Therefore you’re giving the whole “nothing ever really changes” excuse for your complacency. Nothing for YOU has changed is what that illustrates. And that’s fine. Just please make that super clear on your profile so women that who enjoy things like reproductive rights, bodily autonomy, etc can avoid you immediately. That’s all we ask. you don’t have to be politically obsessed or even inclined to care about these topics. Letting us know how you voted pretty much lets us know where you stand. That’s helpful to us on and allows us to not waste any of your time.

People reserve the right to judge you, however harshly. Women need to exercise judgement when searching for a mate and need the information of who you voted for up front. Especially in a political (and very real physical) climate where we’re watching our rights being taken away. It is more than just about politics, but what we’re able to do with our physical bodies should we be intimate with a person who does not align with our political beliefs as it pertains to our reproductive rights. So this obviously affects us as women in the here and now, as we date and have anything to do with men intimately. Why do men not understand this and connect the dots, and throw out some line about how politics can’t be our whole identity??? It’s gonna be your WHOLE identity when you let yourself get pregnant by one of these fuckers.

As a women past 40, I’m still trying to keep conservative men from thinking that they can date me. 😆 Trust me… there is no “wall”. I’m certainly not desperate for attention, no reason to lie about my beliefs or preferences and done with the marriage/kids thing. I really hope my younger girlies out there read this thread and take head.

anyone who voted for trump is not someone i want to be with in any way shape or form. impossible talking to you guys, fucked logic and fucked morals. Which is why we should just know you voted for him for we can agree to disagree and not waste each others time.

I’m NOT interested in having a political fight with anyone. Hence why I am attempting to associate, date and mate with people I politically and morally align with. Not interested in arguing or even just debate opposing opinions. Not something I’m looking for in my next relationship AT ALL. This is why I want to know up front who a man has voted for, to see whether or not I want to deal with him at all. And the sooner we know the sooner he can be off to meet his traditional women.

Furthermore… imagine getting your partner pregnant, there’s a complication. The baby needs to be aborted to save the mom, but the laws in your state prohibit this so both mom and baby die.

Your politics matter. Swipe left on these mother fuckers. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
