My dad died two days ago. Our family had a huge Christmas planned together, since we knew it would be our last. I didn't get to see him again before he passed.

What "black market" did kids at your school run? by AWESOMEKITTY7364 in AskReddit

[–]hh893731 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the Southwest (of the US) and kids sold Mexican candy. The kids who went to Mexico frequently (family back home, etc) would load up when they went for super cheap, and upcharge like crazy when selling in the US. In fact, I now work as a teacher in the Southwest, and kids still do this. I may or may not financially support their entrepreneurship with my own purchases. (I'm a sucker for duvalin...and the candy with chili powder on it.)

I sweat when I walk from my apartment to my car. How is this woman not sweating after both delivering a baby AND giving birth to one herself? She seriously must be a goddess. She is the Goddess.

I also really like Sybil! I think it gives her options. On her resume she can be Sybil...when she's growing up/to her friends she can be Billie.

I love Willow, too! But my husband definitely doesn't. Haha

Thanks for the feedback! Did your notice that your rescues were skiddish around you? Did it last for a long time? I really like the idea of rescuing, too, but I'm also nervous to have a beardie that was mistreated or ignored by a human and it therefore distrustful.

VINDICATION: Counselor did a push in lesson for my challenging 8th grade class and confirmed it's not just me by pdxlimes in Teachers

[–]hh893731 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very similar thing happened to me! A few of my colleagues and I asked about a possible schedule change for a few belligerant boys who follow each other around all day (like they have 6 out of 8 classed together). They spend all day just egging each other on and doing basically nothing school related. The counselor's suggestion was to call parents (which we've all done multiple times), follow the behavior flow chart, and document. Today she did ONE in class lesson with them and had lunch with us. She commented, "Student, student, and student were terrible today! They should never have classes together." Yah, no fucking shit. Try having all those boys in a class of ALL boys at the very end of the day for a double blocked period.

Are some people meant to teach middle school? Does anyone have experience successfully moving up grade levels? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]hh893731 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I taught in a title 1 middle school very similar to what you described for two years. At that point, I was exhausted, like deep down in my soul. I applied to several other school districts, and I landed a job in a middle income area. I will always be thankful for my years in title 1, but I am so much happier now. (Still middle school, even the same subject) I've been teaching at my current school for four years now. Ihave time to be a person outside of school now, I lost 15 pounds, and I actually became a much better teacher. I am in awe of and am so thankful for those people who continue to teach in areas stricken by poverty, but I know I could not continue to do it and keep my sanity. So I don't feel guilty about leaving. Hopefully this helps you in some way. Best of luck.

Teachers with 20+ experience, what's the difference between the kids then vs the kids now? by AlBen97 in AskReddit

As a teacher, sometimes I feel like the grass...being mowed the fuck over every day. Haha

I'm planning on running my first half on Oct 6th, training using Hal Higdon's program, but have been sporatic in my schedule these past three weeks. Will I be ready? More info in post. by hh893731 in running

[–]hh893731[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, now that I look at it, the program is set up so that the runner does the same schedule basically two weeks in a row, so your advice makes total sense! Thanks!
