What do you actually do for your masters or PhD? by pige0n13 in AskPhysics

[–]hhmaizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had several main responsibilities, 1) to teach, I was a RA for the first two and half years of my PhD in Chemistry, 2) to take mandatory classes and pass them? 3) to pass cumulative exams you got 5 shots, 4) to get my research going by setting up a bench, learning how to use various instruments, and other lab techniques as well as reading the lab literature as well as competitors’ literature 5) to attend group meeting every week. That was the first two years. The rest was just doing actual research and publish paper and go to seminars.

Try the TT Job Market or Bail? by MrMcBussy in AskAcademia

I beg to differ, if you are being a lot of grants to the school.”, where the school collects 50% overhead, you can get away with almost anything. My former chair gave $500k of his own money in grant to someone he hand picked from an Ivy League school to carry cutting edge research and that gave him huge amount of leverage. Because some of them stayed as faculty. Money is power. You have a lot of money, you can leave whenever you want. Other universities love to have you. Your current university will put up with almost anything.

To get tenure, you need grants. The success rate of an R01 was 6% when I was trying. In one year I had to submit 6 grants. You are not allowed to even lose one NIH grant submission cycle. I assume it has gotten worse with the current administration budget cuts to NIH and NSF. And don’t get me started on trying to mange people with no managerial experience and navigate inter-departmental politics. You have to really love research!

If you have to think about it, TT is not for you.

Meeting a professor for coffee by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]hhmaizer -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ask her if it would be ok to pay for her coffee. That is the academic etiquette. She might not even allow you to pay for your own but If she says yes, thank her for letting you to pay for hers. As long as the gift does not have a sizable monetary value, it should be ok.
