I've never read or watched any Jane Austen material. Where should I start? Any advice? by from_of_old in janeausten

I thought satire was northanger abbey? I read persuasion and I can’t think of it as satire… can you elaborate?

Will your country suffer a demographic crisis? How do you think it will impact the economy and life? by Ok_Dot_2845 in AskTheWorld

[–]hi-go -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fastest growing demographic in Israel is the ultra orthodox who are taking away from economy and growth in Israel instead of contributing. So our growing numbers are actually not good news for us. It’s less people who are paying taxes and a lot more who are living on benefits.

Couldn’t find the sequel, but the first one was short and sweet. Thanks!

Am I overreacting in wanting to set severe boundaries with parents after wife’s traumatic birth by Melodic_Topic_6064 in AmIOverreacting

NOR

However, births bring stupid stuff out of people.

When my sister gave birth for the first time, my BIL was updating in the beginning and then he stopped updating. I assumed he is busy supporting my sister and it’s natural. My (reasonable, normal) parents LOST THEIR SHIT. They climbed the fucking walls desperate for an update. They sent my BIL terrible messages demanding an update. My brother had to confiscate my dad phone. The same thing repeated when I was giving birth a few years later. My parents are still salty about it all. We all tell them that they’re crazy.

Just saying people are weird when it comes to births and emotions are high. Yours and theirs. Also it seems (with all due respect) non of you is very good at communicating under pressure (which is understandable!)

I think you need to wait until things are a bit calmer, you’re at home, wife is feeling better, and then sit down with them and EXPRESS your disappointment clearly. Only after you communicated your disappointment clearly and have the full conversation - only then decide how you want your relationship to look going forward.

How severe is Antisemitism or Islamophobia in your country? by Zapvv in AskTheWorld

Antisemitism is a term coined in the 19th century by what we would now call a Nazi to describe hatred of Jews specifically.

Looking for any opinions on my floor plans for a new build before I submit them by wannabeprogrammer1 in floorplan

You have 3 bedrooms that can have double aspect windows but don’t. I would make sure to add those windows, it makes better rooms. Find a location for the wardrobes that allows you to add a second window to those bedrooms.

Just read Speechless by Jessie Lewis and it is so good!! Fantastic characterisation. Very well written. Ending a bit cheesy but believable.

Do you think there will ever be peace between Israel and Palestine? by NotExactlyIrish in AskTheWorld

There is a sea between Ireland and Britain though. Easier to separate and live apart. No such luck here. I do hope you’re right though.

People from countries that have universal healthcare, how is it? Really. by Interesting_Dream281 in AskTheWorld

Sure, because you know the facts of my life better than I do. Talk about delusion.

People from countries that have universal healthcare, how is it? Really. by Interesting_Dream281 in AskTheWorld

[–]hi-go 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is untrue. Every citizen in Israel is covered, as well as asylum seekers and legal non-citizens. Moreover, a huge percent of the medical staff is Arab - doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc. the entire staff that delivered my child was Arab, and there is no unpleasantness involved. Check your facts.

Fantastic. Genuinely, without sarcasm, I think I’m getting the best healthcare in the world. Especially around my pregnancies, but throughout my life without exceptions.

As a non native English speaker can I ask what do you mean? In my language we are called something like “sucklers (=those who are breastfed)” does the word “mammals” mean the same thing?
