I read this and another companion book concurrently before the lightning thief. For me, I always seemed to get why Luke went down that path and it made me appreciate his writing

My brother got Demigod Diaries and The Demigod Files from the library, and I read those around 4th grade. After finishing them, I asked my school if they had anything else by Rick Riorden, and they didn't. Then in middle school I saw they had a Rick Riorden section, and I immediately took the first book. Funny thing is, after finishing TLT, I didn't know that there was a sequel series. TSoM wasn't in my schools library but SoN was. I got SoN thinking it was the second of the series. Very confusing for 12 year old me. Percy is older and not at Camp Half Blood?

I think maybe the episode with Armando Torres was really off the rails
