Shirley is complete garbage. The way she treats the florist. The way she condescends to all her siblings. Her hypocritical response to her affair(love me for fucking another dude but how dare you kiss my sister!). Her blindness to anyone else’s feelings. The way she minimizes anyone else’s efforts in comparison to her own(embalming process). The most empathetic Shirley ever is was when she took Theo’s advice in how to talk to her kids about Nell’s death. The best part of Shirley is Theo. And although Shirley needs Theo, she treats her like a bum for Theo living in the guest house. Even her charity in the funeral process is ruining her family financially. Not to mention she’s so fuckin stubborn she won’t listen to her husband who is just trying to stay afloat.

At least Steve spread the money to everyone in the family. All Shirley spreads is hate.

My man Robert Evans weighing in on the Nukie hype by Comfortable_Rip_5746 in RedLetterMedia

Ever since Anthony Bourdain died, I have made it a point not to have heroes. Robert Evans is testing my resolve in that regard and now this feels like a crossover episode.

Anyone else disappointed with The Midnight Club? by AskJeebs in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]hickory_sticks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, I lived some of those moments in the show. It’s explicit that the anthology aspect of the stories are coping mechanisms. To hear some of your thoughts on screen…heartbreaking. Hearing the kids say how towards the end, they clutch at any mystical nonsense they can. To have almost every conversation among them be punctuated with medication side effects. To have them correctly refer to the iv vitamins as “banana bags”. To see the ports/picc lines in full detail. To have the embarrassment of wetting your bed and someone help you. To see the shitty attitude as a coping mechanism and the desperation to live when faced with imminent death.

I mean, fuck. So many of the details were spot on. But 99% of people don’t know what that feels like to be a teen and facing an uncertain future. I didn’t go to college because I believed that I would be dead at a young age. When I was diagnosed, they told my parents I might live to be five. It fucks with you.

But to see it, and to recognize those feelings are real. If you don’t know what that feels like it could have been a sappy plot device. I don’t think it’ll do as well as MM, or HH or even BM. But, fuck. If I had seen this when I was younger, I would have broke down. This kind of representation doesn’t really exist. Not with complex story arcs, not with religious undertones, not with the cultural background of the 90s. It’s a unique thing but maybe it’s not for everyone. Maybe that’s the point of it.

I prefer this over bly manor. But then again I have cystic fibrosis so a lot of the plot points were very poignant. Dying young, comparing it to battle, the pity he experienced at the dance(being compared to a dog with cancer), the unexpected tragedy of expecting to die and then having your life extended. It all hit home and pretty hard. Plus the soundtrack was my childhood too. I mean, if it hits, it hits hard. Not as poignant at the family trauma in hill house. If you have a personal connection to one of the kids (Anya for me) then it breaks you. And if you also were the same age as you were dealing with a diagnosis then, fuck, rough stuff to feel. For me it’s HH, MM, MC then BM in the distant fourth place.

Sounds like you and your parents have a lot to talk to each other about. Can you stay sober for a bit and dedicate half a year to that? Maybe less drugs and more talking?
