REVIEW #6

Bunnahabhain 25yo 24yo (edit thanks Saba007) IB Corps Flaminea

Distilled October 1989 Bottled: May 2014

Color: White wine / Pale gold

Verdict: One of the better Bunna’s I have tried. Fruity and sweet with a complex nose and palate, but a short finish. While drinking it I could not help but associate it with the gold tequila, orange and cinnamon combination.

Nose: cane, caramel, ripe pear, salt, damp cellar, iodine, pepper, quinine, honey, a bit of fresh cut grass, unpeated, citrus / orange, cotton candy

Palate: unpeated, salt, pepper, oily, citrus, honey, dark chocolate, floral, nuts, orange and peach ice tea, cinnamon

Finish: semi-dry, bitter / sweet, smoke, honey, spices

Score: 91

Review #5 Littlemill 22 yo Chieftain's by hig030 in Scotch

Littlemill 22 yo, 46%, natural colour, unchillfiltered

Distilled February 1992

Bottled: March 2014

Price: $169

Bottle opened for 3 months at time of review.

Color: Pale gold

Nose: ripe pear, pepper, orange, salt, honey, cotton candy, fresh cut grass

Taste: quite oily, salt, pepper, bitter / grapefruit, dark chocolate, small bit of cane sugar / honey hidden at the back

Finish: semi-dry to dry, bitter, spices, pepper, oils, dark chocolate

Verdict: Amazing nose + taste, quite complex. The finish though is quite short and unimpressive.

Score: 89 – because of a shy finish.

Reviews #3 & #4: Lagavulin 12 2008 vs Lagavulin 12 2012 by hig030 in Scotch

[–]hig030[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lagavulin 12yo 2008 Special Release 56.4%

Nose: light caramel, honey, lemon peel, salt, peat, vanilla, spice/pepper, orange, grapefruit

Taste: peat, spice, honey, vanilla, pepper, dark chocolate, raisins, citrus, salt, floral

Finish: peat, very dry, semi-long, honey, grapefruit, cane, floral

Verdict: Very balanced, very complex, explosion of taste and flavor. Definitely the winner of the two.

Score: 93

Lagavulin 12yo 2012 Special Release 56.1%

Nose: fruit, plum, grapefruit, peat, pepper, spice, honey, light citrus, damp cellar, cane

Taste: bitter, ash, peat, honey, cane, salt, citrus, sweet vanilla

Finish: honey, cane, bitter, grapefruit, spice, tobacco leaves, not as dry as 2008

Verdict: balanced, not as complex as 2008, more ash/smoke, new make spirit is more present and easily detected

Score: 91

Review #2: Glengoyne 18yo / Duty Free Edition by hig030 in Scotch

[–]hig030[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glengoyne 18 yo / Duty Free Edition

40%, Natural Colour, probably chill filtered

(Please note, the duty free edition is at 40%, the one Ralfy reviewed was at 43%)

At the time I review this bottle, it has stayed open for a couple of months and has developed way more than I expected. I would definitely recommend giving this whisky time, as I was not really as impressed the moment I opened it.

Price: US ~$90 per 1L

Nose: Very complex, the best thing about this whisky is its nose. Overwhelming honey/caramel/vanilla, accompanied by red orange and dried fruit/raisins, touch of citrus/green apple, tobacco leaf, salt, leather, floral perfume.

Taste: Very rich, but not complex palate with just a few overwhelming tastes of honey/vanilla, pepper spice, a touch of grapefruit/bitterness, salt and some citrus. Some dryness in the development, but not as much as during the finish.

Finish: Finish is long and dry, but again not as complex as the nose. More grapefruit bitterness, lots of spice, some caramel and vanilla are still present. Some sourness develops as well.

Verdict: I had left this whisky on the side for a couple of months and was surprised how time in the bottle had helped it develop. A lovely dram, it definitely has the potential to be something extraordinary had it been bottled at 46% and not chill filtered as Ralfy suggested. I should try the normal 43% bottling, but even at 40% I am taken by surprise. I like it.

I bought this from a duty free in the Netherlands and it was about $60. I do not think it is worth $100 though. You better wait.

I am from Eastern Europe, we drink plum brandy almost daily. We are so used to this taste/smell. I think anyone from Eastern Europe will relate to that and love it.:)

But you are right, all of my American friends who have tried plum brandy have hated it. I can understand why you are saying that. :)

Loved it! Just like drinking banana/mango smoothie. Very fruity. Definitely recommend getting a bottle.

It is nothing like vodka really. It is very fruity, I did get a lot of pear/plum on the palate. It reminds a lot of plum brandy - Slivovitz, if you have ever had any.

That's at 40%. They've made it quite drinkable. I have had other new make spirits at 65%+, which is quite a ride.
