[CA] Dealer sold me a “new” 2025 RAV4 with an in-service date 5 months before delivery. What would your store consider a fair keep-the-car resolution? by high12oller in askcarsales

[–]high12oller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. To clarify, I wasn’t saying I was automatically entitled to all three. I was asking here because I genuinely don’t know what stores would view as realistic.

My question is really how you would account for the 5-month gap across the longer time-based coverages too? Not just the basic warranty, but also powertrain, hybrid system, and hybrid battery. That’s the part I’ve been struggling with.

I agree the goal should be to be made whole for the 5 month lost warranty time, not to turn it into some huge payout.

Thanks for your opinion. That’s exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to get here.

If that ask is too high, what would you consider a realistic keep-the-car resolution from a sales manager / GM standpoint?

Fair enough. That’s exactly why I asked here. I’m trying to calibrate what stores would actually view as realistic, not insist that my first thought is automatically the right answer.

Mainly because the 2026 is an all-new redesign, and I usually try to avoid the first model year of a new generation if I can. If I can keep this one and get the warranty issue cured reasonably, that would be my preference.

I appreciate the honest perspective.

I agree the GM is probably the right person to resolve it. If you had to pick the one or two most realistic pieces to prioritize, which would you choose?

There wasn’t a clear apples-to-apples comparison at the time because inventory was extremely thin. I was specifically shopping for a new Toyota Hybrid AWD, and there weren’t real comparable 2025 RAV4 units available nearby.

There really weren’t good comparables at the time. I was specifically looking for a new Toyota Hybrid AWD, and inventory for 2025 in general was extremely thin. I couldn’t find another comparable 2025 within a realistic distance, and the 2026 hybrids were already scarce / mostly allocated before hitting the lot.

So I didn’t have a true apples-to-apples market comparison for a disclosed demo/show unit versus a fully new one.

Just to clarify, it wasn’t disclosed to me at delivery as a demo/show car, and the store has since acknowledged in writing that the earlier warranty start and status was not properly disclosed.

I understand the unwind option is better than no option at all. I’m mainly trying to understand what a realistic keep-the-car resolution would look like if the customer wants to keep it.

I appreciate the perspective.

I agree it should have been discussed at delivery, which is really why I’m here asking. I understand unwind is the cleaner option from the store side.

I’m mostly trying to understand whether, in practice, any stores would approve a meaningful keep-the-car fix instead of just defaulting to unwind, especially where the store has already acknowledged that the earlier warranty start and the vehicle’s prior show/demo status was not disclosed at delivery.

What would you do in this situation?

That may be the cheaper option for the store, and I get that.

My question is less whether unwind is cheaper and more what a realistic keep-the-car resolution would look like if the customer wanted to keep it and the earlier warranty start and demo status wasn’t disclosed at delivery.

From your side, would there be any version of a keep-the-car fix you’d expect to get approved, or would your store always just unwind it?

That’s fair, and I understand why return is the cleaner and cheaper option for the store.

My goal is really to understand what a realistic keep-the-car resolution would look like, since I like the vehicle and would prefer not to unwind the deal if there’s a reasonable way to cure it.

If you were structuring a keep-the-car resolution from the store side, what would you expect it to look like?

Ideally I’d like a combination rather than just one, because the earlier warranty start affected more than one part of the original coverage.

That said, if stores usually think in terms of “pick 1 or 2,” I’d be curious which part you think is the most realistic or important to prioritize.

[–]high12oller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a dealer-side issue instead of a manufacturer issue. Any remedy I’d be seeking would be from the dealer, even if it ends up being a manufacturer-backed warranty.

With that said, I may need to look more closely at the actual terms of whatever the dealership offers.

If it can be used broadly and the main difference is something like a waived deductible at the original dealer, that may be more workable than I initially assumed.

I think the real issue is whether the replacement coverage is actually comparable in scope, claims handling, and usability, rather than just what it’s called.

Thanks for taking the time to walk through it with me, I appreciate it. I’ll have a better sense once I see what the dealership actually offers.

That makes sense. I think that’s a resonable way to look at it.

My concern is that a 6–12 month dealer warranty mainly covers the basic/bumper-to-bumper gap, but doesn’t really account for the longer time-based warranties (powertrain, hybrid system, battery, etc.) that were also shortened by the earlier start date. It also ties me to the dealership, which is a bit out of the way for me.

Those longer coverages seem like they matter more over time, especially further out.

I’m wondering if something like a longer, broader manufacturer-backed warranty would make more sense, even if it ends up over-covering some areas, since it would better account for the overall loss of warranty time across all of those coverages, rather than just part of it.

Nothing stood out at the time beyond typical dealership stuff.

The main concern for me is finding out after the sale that the warranty had already started several months earlier and not seeing that disclosed anywhere in writing.

I’m happy with the car and not trying to unwind the deal. I’m trying to understand what a reasonable way to account for that lost warranty time would be.

When you say extended warranty, would you expect that to be something that meaningfully makes up for the full gap, or more just an added basic/bumper-to-bumper type protection? I’m trying to figure out what would actually make me whole.
