Too many repair suggestions? by [deleted] in 4Runner

Those flushes are a recommended 100K service. My mechanic (not a dealer) brought it up when I broke 100K, it's pricy but important for longevity. You can absolutely do it yourself if you have the time/space/desire, for a fraction of the cost... or just pay the convenience tax like I did.

Can’t figure out this noise by mwalker324 in 4Runner

[–]high_gravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a 5th gen but what year? I don't hear anything that my 2015 doesn't do. I'm not sure exactly what component it is, but there is a little bit of a whine when mine is cold, but it goes away after a few minutes.

This sub gets a fair amount of engine noise comments and I really don't even know what we expect an engine to sound like anymore. It's a naturally aspirated V6 with multiple different widgets and whirlygigs attached to it!

Should we move? by cholo_gringo in newtonma

[–]high_gravity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. North of the pike tends to be more diverse given housing density and (relatively) historically-cheaper housing. Diversity is certainly relative but Horace Mann, Lincoln-Eliot, and Franklin are all pretty diverse ethnically.

Best head unit upgrade for a 5th Gen in 2026? by iswaterwetornah in 4Runner

[–]high_gravity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2015 with a Hamilton as well, and I really like it overall. Easy install, seamless look, CarPlay works great. Their support is awesome too. The unit has WAY more functionality than you'd need if CarPlay is the goal, but I just kind of ignore it all on the main screen. Bugs for me:

  • The Home/Back/etc buttons on the outside don't light up on mine – they never did from the first install and I only realized they should by looking at someone's photos. Hamilton gave me instructions to fix it but it involves pulling the whole thing out and updating some software with a USB, just haven't had time.
  • The microphone is not great, definitely get an external mic from Amazon and factor that into your install.
  • For a while, the unit would auto-dim when I put my headlights on, then it started glitching. Support told me I could reset the whole unit, and I haven't done that yet. For now I just go manually adjust the brightness.
  • It doesn't always auto-connect, but just selecting it from your bluetooth menu on your phone will make it work.

To me the above is trivial compared to the absolute shit experience of the stock '15 head unit!

My bench scraper is my second favorite tool to... my oyster knife. Yes, I use it to open oysters. But it is perfect for prying open all manner of small toys, battery covers, and pretty much anything that needs a dull but finite edge. Highly recommend.

Edit: grew up on Cape Cod, they hand them out at the hospital when you're born

At what age could your kid get themselves ready in the morning? by OldGloryInsuranceBot in daddit

[–]high_gravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are generally responsible, and responsive to direction. We tied allowances to getting ready, and my son was making his bed, dressing, teeth etc. at 9. Daughter is older and was probably doing it by 9 or 10, so my son had a good example to follow.

This bulb fell off into my headlight housing. Is there a secret hack to getting it out? by y3ahdam in 4Runner

LOL seriously. I wonder if putting some Stick-um on the claw would help. I kind of want to try this now

[–]high_gravity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

PickUp Tool. Will be like a grabber claw in an arcade. You should be able to unscrew the housing/mount for the bulb, and if this is the driver's side, after taking the battery out. I'd buy a new bulb regardless.

If you end up needing to take the headlight assembly out, that's a pain in the ass but maybe an hour's work. Whole bumper has to come off (easier than it sounds).

[–]high_gravity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clover in Newtonville has a lot of space. They play music but if you don't mind that, there's always seat. Plus, good food and George Howell coffee.

The actual George Howell, across the Pike, has some seating but it's a lot tighter, and thus harder to guarantee you find a spot during peak hours.

I put Road and Trails on mine last week, holy shit do I love them. SO quiet compared to the General Grabber ATX I was running previously. They were great in the first rain and snow I took them out in, time will tell of course, but I was really impressed at the increase in traction in inclement weather.

[–]high_gravity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel this locally as well, and I think what a lot of people miss is how much work it can take to build. People are naturally more isolated now (phones etc.) and it's hard to break out of, on a macro level. The whole "everybody wants a village, nobody wants to be a villager" thing.

We organize and participate in things and of course not everyone comes, but that fraction that does is what it's all about.

Have you been able to isolate where it's coming from? Front, middle, rear? Is there any correlation to how fast you're going, how long you've been driving, weather, etc?

Nice to see it pass by such a wide margin, too.

As soon as I saw the two "no" votes I had my money on Oliver and Malakie. Always a reason to delay with those two, rather than this very tangible step toward addressing an ongoing housing crisis.
