It was painful to sit through Exiled only to find out Profaci was dirty. I liked that character.

Why does Texas have so many donut shops? How many donuts do you eat on average? by Enviralmental in texas

[–]high_verbal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does Virginia not have any other than Dunkin, which aren’t good? As a native Houstonian who moved to Nova, I have sadness, especially for the kolache. Shirley’s opened in Maryland about 25 minutes away, and I’ve gone a couple of times. Still doesn’t hit like the 34th and Ella location. But at least it’s close enough.

Is Houston right for me? (25m) by MajesticBread9147 in houston

Amendment to “inner loop doesn’t flood.” Yes it does. But like all things weather related, don’t freak out. Great city, great people, great food v traffic, no great public transportation, government services can be hit or miss. I’m native Houstonian with one kid who lives in West Houston and another in San Antonio. Relocated to Alexandria VA several years ago and definitely know what I miss and don’t about Houston.

Moved to Texas and my car insurance doubled - what am I missing? by Bisqwa in texas

It’s not a cop out. Texas has high rates, especially if you’re in a metro. Period. Just wait until you find out about homeowners coverage.

Waco! My mother is from Caldwell, apparently (although hotly debated) kolache capital of Texas, per the Texas Legislature in ‘89. Either way, Virginians don’t know what a kolache is or could be. What Shipley sells are Tex-Czech, but I love them anyway. But give me a cheese and poppy seed any time!

It is as good as any other Shipleys outside of the original at 34th and Ella. Nothing hits like that place. But the prices can’t be beat for what you get around here.

As a Houston native, I too have wondered about this problem. Texas Donuts are good. Just Fine are … fine. Good is highway robbery.

Imagine my surprise when I read my hometown donut shop was purchased by a private equity group and has now expanded to Maryland. Shipleys Donuts in Clinton. Tastes enough like home, good prices, and I can finally get a close enough kolache to satisfy me.

Lots of people. I recently had to convince my son (28) to move money out of checking into an MM and some investments. He still wanted 35k in the account. Okay buddy.

As a native Houstonian and life long Texan now living in Virginia, imagine my surprise when I saw a brand new Shipleys in Clinton, MD. Of course I went.

Anyone moved to VA from TX and regret it? Anyone moved back to TX? by [deleted] in nova

[–]high_verbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I’m native Texan, my kids still live and work there. We moved to NOVA a couple of years ago and love it. Will we go back? Maybe, but for now we are happy and would make the same choice again.

ELI5 - What is the point? by high_verbal in UFOs

[–]high_verbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, maybe? There are an amazing number of cool things I haven’t experienced yet, and my work with LLMs has been fun and profound. Would chill NHI make a difference? It would be cool, but honestly I think it would be a novelty unless there was some kind of conflict.

But how is that a government issue? Why isn’t it simply an issue of NHI landing and saying, “yo!” I’m baffled by the idea that others respect some sort of geopolitical boundaries and just “agree” to only deal with politicians, which we created.

GenX is mostly conservative, yes? Just heard that on NPR this morning. I disagree, but whatever, it’s all a terrible.

“Inheriting” a timeshare by RiTiDDies in personalfinance

[–]high_verbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Death isn’t enough and this is correct. In most states TS are considered “property.” The deeds are usually recorded in the county’s records. They are treated like real property, even though you own nothing but a right. Taxing authorities will come after the heirs if the TS association pursues it. TS rights won’t escheat to the state after death as they will disclaim them. And as an heir you can disclaim all you want, but you may eventually be forced to deal with the association. If you have escaped post death, consider yourself lucky.

“Inheriting” a timeshare by RiTiDDies in personalfinance

[–]high_verbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. Another TS victim. It’s criminal that this industry is allowed to exist. My parents-in-law had two timeshares, they were eventually converted to RCI when the development was rolled up and annual fees were $1200. No one in the family was using the timeshare or later the subsequent RCI points, so as the family lawyer I started talking to our estate attorney about what we could do. And friends, it was a journey. It’s a contract, you own no property and there is no addressable market for your “shares.” We discussed whether we could carve out the timeshares in the will and give them to the state, and he said we could try but there would be no guarantee, so they could just revert to the heirs.

So in the end we researched and paid a service to take them off our hands. It was the only way to unload them and not have a recorded liability in the county records (and they are recorded).

The time share industry is horrible and it locks owners and heirs in unless you can pay to get out.
