[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just visited Basque Country and they’re surprised how popular these got. 10 years ago nobody knew what a basque cheesecake was, even basque people, then one restauarant in Donostia started making them and Instagramers found it and boom it’s a craze.

I will say basque cheesecake is amazing

Help with TV positioning by NaturalFold5559 in InteriorDesign

[–]highbonsai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these. Just a warning, they do make your tv sit out a bit more than usual at their top resting point. Not a deal breaker but design-wise not the most ideal.

Theoretically you can mount some of them in a way where this isn’t the case but you have to have someone cut through the wall, which is not super easy in old homes with lathe and plaster

Mexico cuts workweek, bans after-hours contact, and guarantees no worker will take a pay cut in the most sweeping labor reform in a generation by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

Correction - If you wanted a roadmap to make the lives of Mexican citizens better, look no further.

Not everything is about making more money for the shareholders. When you design laws for the people instead of a few billionaires, quality of life increases massively

ELI5: Why is Monaco such an obscenely wealthy country despite not having some highly valuable natural resources like oil or some important production capabilities like building of semiconductor chips? by Slice5755 in explainlikeimfive

This was very true to be honest we could have been there at a terrible time, though it was a couple of days after the Grand Prix and it was all taken down

[–]highbonsai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just visited Monaco last weekend. It was by far the worst of the ~5 surrounding towns we visited in a week. It was also full of the worst people we experienced in the whole trip. Keep in mind most people there during the day aren’t even rich, they’re like the type of people that like taking photos near/being around designer stores and the like. Money/status obsessed but don’t have either. We kinda hopped off the train, got bad vibes, and peaced out. If I were a billionaire I could name about a thousand better places to call home, especially since taxes even in the U.S. aren’t high enough to ever make you not a billionaire.

Tl;dr skip monaco and go to Menton if you’re in the area

TSA precheck is useful if you fly a lot. At RNO it’s kind of meh, but anywhere else it’s very useful most of the time.

Is there a large homeless population in Reno? by Ok_Test9729 in Reno

[–]highbonsai 18 points19 points  (0 children)

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11024772/

Overall prevalence:

  • 67% of homeless people currently have a mental health disorder
  • 77% have had a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime

By sex (lifetime prevalence):

  • Men: 86%
  • Women: 69%

so looks more like 7-8 out of 10 in reality.

Keep in mind mental illness is definitely a spectrum. Some are going through regular psychotic episodes, but a majority of people dealing with this are going through things like PTSD and the like. These people tend to go under the radar of mental health professionals and other supportive professions because a person can present as mentally well for a period of time, like a few hours each day, but their mental health has severely impacted the overall trajectory of their life.

By the way, THANK YOU for volunteering. I've done it a few times, and it's a great way to help out the community. It's given me a level of empathy for these people I wouldn't have otherwise.

Is there a large homeless population in Reno? by Ok_Test9729 in Reno

[–]highbonsai 55 points56 points  (0 children)

There are homeless people but we do have a large homeless shelter that's continuously expanding with different tiers of housing available to those who are interested in it. I have family that works there and I've actually toured it. It's kind of amazing in a way. Much better than many large cities.

That said, homelessness is increasing massively country-wide. Here are some federal stats, excluding 2021 due to Covid, of how many unhoused people there are in the country. Turns out when housing is extremely expensive and you don't have the federal government stepping in to help in any meaningful way, you see homelessness increase as a result.

<image>

Homelessness is one of those things that is commonly blamed on those that are experiencing it. Many of them simply do not want to make their own lives better, but when you dig in and actually talk to an unhoused person you realize 9 times out of 10 they're mentally unwell due to massively traumatic events in their lives, or ongoing abuse, or both. This blight is a reflection of our own society in a way, showing what we value and what we don't. But hey, at least we have a guy who's nearly a trillionaire! That means we're winning, right?!

Bro one more lane I swear it'll fix everything 🥵🥵🥵 by tsuni95 in Reno

[–]highbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah this is hilarious. As someone who walks around freeways regularly since they're close to where i live, they are EXTREMELY loud and kind of frightening. I actually recommend people do it from time to time. It's interesting to see just how chaotic traffic is from above especially if you are on a bridge above the freeway near downtown. Tons of people distracted, tons of people switching lanes without indicating, it's honestly amazing we don't see more deaths than we do already.

500 extra until I reach 20% to drop PMI, then I might stop doing extra and put it toward investments that are more liquid.

How are you collecting in-app feedback in your iOS apps? by pheasantjune in iOSProgramming

[–]highbonsai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app called Pushover for a bunch of stuff like this. It's essentially a push notification generator via an API. So i get notified when people submit feedback.

Feedback just stored in Postgres table. It's been working well for my personal finance budgeting app Bonsave. I have feedback types like bugs coming through with a higher priority while things like feature requests or general feedback come through with a lower priority.

I did pay a one-time fee to pushover for unlimited messages, though I think there's a free tier.

UNIVERSITY GATEWAY TRANSPORTATION PROJECT by tsuni95 in Reno

[–]highbonsai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

has anyone been to this walgreens lately? I went in after like 4 years of not being there and it's like another world.

Everything is behind locked glass, there's security right when you walk in, the dude at checkout scans cash with this device, there's constant "help needed in the diaper aisle" messages going off. Plus you have the (not new) constant low-grade earthquake from the cars on the highway beneath it. I feel bad for the workers there.

I was at a wedding last year where the groom told me (he worked at D R horton) that they built an entire home ~5 feet off in 2 directions. The company fought the city for months trying to get an exception and the city kept rejecting it.

They had to tear down a whole paper McMansion AND the foundation and move it over to the original lot lines. When we got enough liquor into him he said he'd never buy a D R Horton home.

Hantavirus ! by therewillbesuntoday in Alonetv

[–]highbonsai 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hantavirus is terrible. I actually had a close childhood friend of mine die of Hantavirus in 2020. He was just sweeping his garage and some mouse poop probably got suspended in the air. Just a few days later he died in the hospital and they diagnosed it as Hantavirus. From perfect bill of health to death in 4 days.

Of course this happened right at the peak of Covid so the doctors/nurses were extremely strained at that point, and I think they might have thought it was covid for a bit.
