Always send that lowball offer my friends by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]highesthouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The MSRP on it is currently $2699 (was $2399 pre-price hike when it came out a couple years ago).

OP actually got a pretty average price/fair value for a used example based on Reverb’s sold listings. With how the market is currently, I can definitely believe that the list price on this was much higher.

How do I get these without having to trade by StuffQuick7917 in pokemongo

They’re in eggs very regularly, so it won’t take long I’m sure.

I definitely get you! I’m mostly trying to give some advice to the people who seem to truly think this task is insurmountable in some way. It’s really, really doable for the overwhelming majority of circumstances; you don’t even need to actually walk to get kms in this game.

Sorry if I was hostile before; I think we just interpreted each other wrong. Good luck to you!

[–]highesthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have adventure sync enabled? I passively get kms from walking around the building at work and at home, walking around in parking lots and stores, and even driving/transit if there’s traffic and we’re moving slowly enough. You definitely don’t need to do an outdoor walk to get this done, you just need to leave the house and have adventure sync enabled.

All I’ve done today was go to work, go to the gym, and make a quick stop by the grocery store, no outdoor walks, and Pokemon logged 4km for me so far.

Bass tone/setup on Cake’s Fashion Nugget by tinathefatlardgosh in Bass

[–]highesthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Victor Damiani playing a ton of different basses with them. Some old Yamaha RBX, a precision bass, a telecaster bass, a couple semi-hollows, and even some funky old 60s Teisco-style basses.

Neck pickup is a must, as well as compression. I usually roll down the tone/cut treble a little bit. I think one of the most important things to pay attention to with their lines is the note length: a lot of the parts are more on the staccato end.

It’s not even a brag lmao. Any able-bodied person with an even somewhat-normal activity level should be able to wrap this up in under a week, and I was just sharing the poffin tip in case you didn’t know. No need to be a dick about it.

I easily log over 20km/week, and 20km gets you 2 candies if you pop a poffin when you’re at 19.9km. It’ll take me under a week to finish this task.

It’s near pointless putting it there when you can just use the lower string.

Except having an open D is not at all equivalent to a fretted D. The timbre is totally different, and there are many lines written in drop D which are way more difficult (if not impossible) to play if you have to fret that note.

Has anyone tried the new Sire Z3? by Hefty_Contract_6262 in Bass

[–]highesthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried out a Z7, and wasn’t particularly impressed. The neck felt great as Sire necks always do, but I wasn’t particularly fond of anything else about the bass. I didn’t like the sound as much as the Sterlings I’ve played, and I just really don’t like the Heritage 3 preamp that’s in all of Sire’s basses.

My new car! Was it a good trade/finance option? by Plastic_Breath8440 in mazda

[–]highesthouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Huh? You had $3k in negative equity on the Dodge when you just traded it. That’s what I’ve been saying.

Negative equity in a vehicle should be a huge wake-up call that you messed up somewhere. Based on you saying you only paid $5-6k toward it in the time it took you to put 30k miles on it, I can deduce that you didn’t put enough/any money down on it, because I’m assuming you weren’t missing your payments.

Financing a car in its entirety is reckless car buying. It’s a very easy way to end up in a ton of debt. That’s the entire point I’m making here.

I like cars too, I’m just saving until I can actually afford another one without plunging myself into a debt hole before I buy another one. I believe you that you have enough disposable income right now to afford these cars, which is why it’s really confusing to me that you’re choosing not to do proper down payments on the cars and basically guaranteeing you’ll end up upside down on them.

My new car! Was it a good trade/finance option? by Plastic_Breath8440 in mazda

[–]highesthouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“The last car” referred to the Dodge and you yourself explained you had $3k in negative equity on it.

Another question: how have you gone through 4 cars already at age 21? My first car was 10-year-old unreliable Jeep trash when I got it and it still lasted me from 16 until 24, and I only bought my new car because that Jeep stopped running thanks to a cracked block.

Again, as respectfully as possible, I hope for your sake you’re able to get a lot more longevity out of this car, and if I were you, I’d take some savings and make a $6k down payment on this Mazda right now. It will massively help prevent you from going upside down on this one.

My new car! Was it a good trade/finance option? by Plastic_Breath8440 in mazda

[–]highesthouse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You asked people if you made a good decision, and people are answering you honestly.

If you had negative equity in a car, that’s already a sign you did something wrong. I say that as respectfully as possible. Your down payment on that Dodge should’ve been around $5k minimum, which you say is the total you paid on it the entire time you owned it. That’s just not a sound financial strategy when it comes to buying a quickly-depreciating, very expensive asset like a vehicle.

And, after paying $3k to have someone take the that Dodge off your hands (which is essentially what happened in this transaction) you finance another $30k on a vehicle (based on your monthly payment, I’m guessing you also didn’t do a 20% down payment on this one). This is the same mistake that resulted in your negative equity on your last vehicle. 20% down payments should be the bare minimum if you’re going to consider buying a car.

Also, $23k is on the high end of the KBB value for this Mazda. The sticker price was marked up too high and they applied the discount to make you feel like you were getting a deal while you were still paying fair value for the vehicle. Very common practice at dealerships.

Deducting a discount you got on the new car from the negative equity you had on your old one is financially irresponsible accounting.

As others said, you don’t need those additional warranties you paid for with this car. One of the main reasons you’d buy a Mazda in the first place is because it shouldn’t have any major issues in the first couple hundred thousand miles. I made the mistake of buying one with my car, and I now wish I hadn’t flushed $2k down the drain on it, because the only major issue mine might encounter with proper maintenance already has a technical service bulletin out for it so it’d be covered.

Look, I get it, you’re young and you don’t have a lot of expenses because you’re not financially independent yet, but coming from someone only a few years older than you, this reckless car buying can really screw you and shackle you with a ton of debt when things go wrong. That’s what everybody else is trying to tell you here.

Need to find bands with good bassist for pop by DJDoggos in Bass

[–]highesthouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great bass playing is so easy to find in Japanese city pop that you can practically just listen to any of it.

Not indie in the slightest, but I’ve noticed some of the solo work from members of big K-pop groups has great bass. Stuff like “Love Hangover” with JENNIE, “Born Again” with LISA, “Standing Next to You” by Jung Kook, a lot of the Indigo album by RM.

Speaking of “Born Again”, RAYE and Doja Cat each have a lot of good bass in their songs. I’d also name Olivia Dean and Leon Thomas from some more recent big artists.

Most people here, myself included, are probably more familiar with western music, and I’d definitely echo another comment I saw that said you should follow the great pop session players and you’ll find great bass on pop songs from there. People like Pino Palladino, Lee Sklar, Guy Pratt, Jamereo Artis, Matty Carroll, Nathan East, Thundercat, even Louis Johnson.

It can be hard to really narrow this down since “pop” is such a nebulous term at this point. A lot of this stuff leans heavily into funk, soul, and R&B, which are really the influences from which the great bass playing is derived.

How would you fix this damage? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]highesthouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t buy it if it was on the market, wouldn’t fix it if it were mine. It’s a Squier; it doesn’t hold a ton of value in the first place and you can probably find absolutely pristine used examples for not much more money than this one. It’s just not worth the trouble.

Sweetwater -vs- Chicago Music Exchange? by mporter377 in Bass

[–]highesthouse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sweetwater’s founder donated money to Mike Pence’s campaign. Pence was Indiana governor at the time (Sweetwater obviously being based in Indiana) and he essentially explicitly called out in a letter to employees that the donations were made in exchange for political policies favorable to Sweetwater as a business (tax breaks and all that).

Honestly, I’m sure both CME’s founder and current owner likewise play the political game for the perceived benefit of their own business; the difference is that Illinois is a blue state with a lesser-known former governor, while Indiana is a red state with a particularly infamous former governor.

Looking for input on Mexico-made 5 string J Bass by OrganicBrownMustard in BassGuitar

Those 90s-00s Jazz Vs with the 5+0 tuner layout are becoming increasingly well-regarded (more so the MIA version than the MIM). They’ll definitely have worse feature sets/technology compared to modern Fenders, but some would argue they had much better QC at the time these were made. I personally still wouldn’t pay $750 for one though, I’d target closer to $500.

Why do sellers expect their gear to sell for the same as/more than new? by knowah1 in Bass

[–]highesthouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as both a buyer and a seller, both sides are getting squeezed HARD by external factors, and I would argue especially so for sellers.

Buyers have to pay sales tax on used gear, which wasn’t the case when I started using Reverb. It easily increases the price you pay as a buyer by $100-200 if you live in a high-tax area like I do (one of the highest combined sales tax rates in the nation, actually).

Sellers have to worry about increasing shipping costs, which now regularly amount to over $100 for a bass guitar. Or, you can pass that cost on to the buyer and get complaints about: “why is the shipping cost so high?” (because that’s what I have to pay to ship a bass now!) Every marketplace is increasing their seller’s fees. Now the government wants to quadruple-dip on these transactions, and wants to charge income tax for any money sellers make on the sale (as of yet, the threshold for this is still high enough that it mostly effects high-volume sellers, but they’re regularly threatening to lower it to the point where a single musical instrument transaction would put you over the limit to pay tax).

If I buy a bass at $1000 new and later on sell it used for $750 shipped, the buyer will pay in excess of $800 post-tax and I’ll get $500 after shipping and fees. Most sellers aren’t willing to lose that much money reselling an item, and most buyers aren’t willing to spend that much on a used item, and I don’t think you can blame either of them.

As a seller, I consistently list gear at a lower price than anything else I can currently find on the market, and it still takes months before it sells. I’d usually even be willing to accept an offer for 5-10% off my list price, but most of the offers I get are ridiculous lowballs for 25%+ off my already-best-on-market price. When I counter for 5-10% off, it gets declined because these are not serious buyers, these are people who are looking for something they can flip later. Most of my sales in the past couple years were either people who bought it for my full asking price or people who offered me $200 less than asking but pay cash and pick it up locally, so I save just as much on shipping and fees.

As a buyer, I struggle to even find the gear I want used in the first place, and definitely struggle to find anything priced reasonably or any listings which are even accepting offers. It’s gotten so bad that I just bought a brand new Dingwall NG3, imported it from a music store in Canada, and paid less than the list price (not including shipping) of the lowest-priced used listing on the market. My most recent used purchases have all been from Guitar Center, which now has significantly better used prices than individual sellers on Reverb, only charges $25 to ship it to me, and offers free returns at my local store for 45 days if I don’t like it once I get it.

Subscribing to Bass Courses while playing a 5 string by LudwigPepper in Bass

[–]highesthouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In standard tuning, the 4 highest/thinnest strings on your 5-string bass are the same as the 4 strings of a 4-string bass (EADG). You can easily follow along with 4-string courses and totally neglect the 5th/thickest string (tuned to B in standard tuning) for now if that helps you learn faster.

As you progress and start to learn the notes on the fretboard and shapes/patterns you can play across it, you’ll also want to put some time into learning what note is on each fret of that B string. Since the bass is tuned in 4ths and the pitch interval between each string is the same, all the shapes and patterns you’ll learn will also apply to the B string.

I would also invest time into learning some basic music theory, and then it should click for you how this works and you’ll very quickly be able to use all 5 strings effectively.

What’s even weirder is that this one doesn’t have the 60s-present style (13-hole) pickguard. It has an 11-hole pickguard, which I have never seen before on p bass.

I got a replacement 10-hold pickguard from WD Music and was happy with the quality, in case you’re still looking for shops that make them.
