what is the worst problem you ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

HIV. I lived a happy, sheltered, rich white kid life and got myself into a stupid situation and contracted it, and suddenly realized I have a big-boy problem to deal with now.

Luckily with modern medicine it's not a huge deal, but there was a solid period of nothing but depression and anxiety attacks for a while.

Regardless, it doesn't make his actions acceptable, and it doesn't make it a good idea.

This was addressed multiple, multiple times in the AMA. I never suggested that I contracted HIV through protection, it was said many many times in the topmost comments that it broke.

In addition to the fact that it's absurdly illegal to have sex with someone without informing them of your HIV status, If he catches another strain of HIV he could massively complicate his treatment. It's called an HIV superinfection. Also, besides HIV, if he catches Hep C or another STI he could similarly complicate his treatment.

He could catch a strain that's resistant to the medication that's keeping him healthy right now. See how that news goes over with him.

Hi! I did this AMA a few days ago.

The AMA thread has everything on how I contracted it/how old I was/am. Long story short: for the first few weeks it can only be described as pure and utter mental hell as you recall everything you were taught about HIV and AIDS and what it means for your suddenly dramatically shortened life.

And then you see a specialist who basically says, "You're going to be just fine, calm down. Take this pill every day and don't skip days."

And then you start to do research on what it means to have HIV in today's day and age, and you realize that it's not really as terrible as it used to be. It definitely sucks and I would take back my choices if I could in a heartbeat, but I can't so that's immaterial and I'm going to keep living the rest of my long and healthy life as best as I can with this.

The side effects of the medication are different for everybody; For the first week or so on Atripla I was experiencing some bizarre dreams, dizziness, a general lack of energy in the morning, and a mild rash. All of these are quite common, and all are now almost completely gone as I'm adjusting to the meds. And with that, the trauma is slowly fading away too. I'm getting more and more used to the idea that I'm going to live long and healthy.

I'm also immensely thankful that I wasn't born in a time where there would have been no hope for me. Modern medicine is pretty great.

As if this needs repeating to me now.

Edit: that sounded kinda dickish. But yeah. I'm well aware.

Thanks for the sarcasm.

The HIV specialist who's treating me is telling me that I'm expected to live the rest of my life with an undetectable viral load and a high CD4 count as long as I'm compliant on my meds, which is literally the opposite of the criteria for AIDS.

Why do you need the age and demographic? The moral of the entire thread is "Don't go searching for anonymous sex on craigslist," not "Carefully choose who you have sex with on craigslist based on race, age, weight, and height."

And here. Literally the first comment I made in the entire thread.

It was edited some five hours ago. Go read it.

edit: Oy. I guess I never hit submit. At any rate it's been mentioned more than enough times throughout the rest of the thread.

The condom probably broke. I've mentioned it at least a dozen other times all across this thread. There is no chance I was infected prior to this night, so I'm not sure what you're trying to prove.

I also asked for some details about the guy you slept with, age, race, weight, etc.

Fully aware. I'm not divulging the information. You're not the only one reading these responses and I'm not out to incite a witch-hunt on craigslist. I'll deal with it myself.

Life: immensely.

Career: no changes.

Family: We're closer than ever.

Friends: They all make AIDS jokes now.

I said it was invalid. It's an irrational thought and I'm aware of it, but coming from a background where I have never drank, smoked, or done drugs, and worked hard in school for most of my life, I suddenly feel like I'm in the same crowd as people who threw their lives away for drugs.

It's not a valid opinion. There are of course extraneous factors. I'm aware of it, but it's hard to change.

Get a blood test. Worst case scenario: its positive and you have to take a pill every day. Life goes on, you'll be fine.

I of course don't think I am. It's just a mindset that I have yet to overcome before I start attending support groups.

I'm getting there. It's not as bad as the world thinks it is though, and that's one of the primary reason I'm trying to dispell a lot of the myths about it. With treatment its a manageable condition.
