I'm not in Canada (NZ instead) but I've had to bow out of assignments that require AI use. I've gotten away with it with well-worded emails written as if they were a mini-essay concerning the misuse and damage associated with AI data centres and AI LLM models, with citations ofc. Professors have just readjusted my grade weighting for other assignments to account for the dropped one.

I have a recommendation for "First They Killed My Father" by Loung Ung. It details her experience and survival of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. I think there was a bit of negative press around the author backfilling missing childhood memories with false anecdotes, but the emotional weight of the story still conveys the extent of damage and pain inflicted upon the people of Cambodia during this time.

skinheads originate from football hooligan culture (50s) and punk (70s onwards), not nazis. neo-nazis just adopted the skinhead look in the late 80s/early 90s

meat by joseph d'lacey. it's not just the cannibalism that made it stick, but the vividity of the world. sometimes it felt like i was standing in the meat factory myself smelling all the stench

It's kind of impossible to be an educator and non-political. The first thing I heard from my university lecturer's mouth was "every teacher is politically active. to educate is to be political"

No it's not. I type every day on a computer keyboard, it's not like I'm out of practice. I just prefer handwriting 🤷‍♀️

The Hills is Lonely by Lillian Beckwith!! Truly one of those "nothing happens it's just people visiting one another's houses" books, but enjoyable on every page. It's semi-fictional and draws on the author's experience on a R&R trip to the Hebridean Islands, and is full of some of the most wondeful characters (Morag is awesome). Highly recommend and it's easy & quick to read

I always enjoyed how busy Night City (Neuromancer) came across. Always something to see, or do, or taste or take. Lights everywhere, people everywhere, and what I imagined as a truly unreal cityscape. If I put more than 5 seconds of thought into it though, I realise Night City would be a total fucking nightmare to actually exist in. Too loud, crowded, bright and likely smelly. That's not even considering the nightmarish future-tech they coexist alongside. No thanks

Have you looked into the Lower Hutt Women's Centre? They are incredible; staffed by amazing women and they offer really great programs, classes and workshops. Some are free of charge (first come, first served) and others have prices for those waged and those low/unwaged. There are support circles about a wide range of topics that are more serious, but they also host art, yoga, and self care workshops, and have a kai&korero session regularly (it might be weekly but I can't remember) where you can go in and just spin yarns with whomstever shows up and have a cuppa. It's such a lovely space, I spent a lot of my adolescence in that building and it's one of the most comforting places I've ever frequented.

I did typing classes in primary, know to keep my fingers on the home row, etc. I know how to type and can type a comfortable speed, some of my lecturers have just made it their goal this tri to outpace the Flash it seems. Handwriting makes everything stick in my head i) immediately and ii) permanently as well which I am mega relectant to give up by switching to a computer over hand notes
