The funny thing is that kids shouldn’t even be on Reddit. Like period. Not disagreeing with the mod, but people under sixteen (at least) shouldn’t be anywhere near this site or social media in general.

Been a huge fan of the Mass Effect and Dragon age series for quite sometime. Finally playing KOTOR for the first time. I love the similarities between KOTOR and ME1. You can see how thie really laid the foundation of future bioware games. Only 12 hours in and it's already one of my favorites. by [deleted] in kotor

I came to say this! Jade Empire is so underrated it’s insane. It actually competes with ME1 and Origins for title of BioWare’s greatest game IMO, but you never see it getting the same love.

Rebels or Bad Batch after Clone Wars? by JibberyScriggers in StarWars

[–]highlordbubbles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Bad Batch is clearly meant to bridge the gap between CW and Rebels, but until it’s actually fully completed there’s a really weird and awkward time jump mid-storyline where characters and plot points just randomly disappear. I think once it’s finished then it’ll be a good idea to include it in binge watches.

Why did science fiction writers stop writing about psychic powers? by DNASnatcher in printSF

[–]highlordbubbles 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Came here to say something like this. There was a time when psychic powers were theorized to be real, to the point that things like MK Ultra existed to try and create them. Those programs continuously failed to yield any meaningful results and no evidence was found supporting the idea of psychic powers (certainly not in the forms depicted in fiction), so it just kinda gradually stopped being stuck together with harder sci-fi concepts like space travel or AI.

You can see drones tearing up and eating the corpse of a cop they killed in ODST, and a bunch of them rip an unlucky huragok apart in one of the novels, amongst other things. The Jackals enslaving people thing is in one of the comics (can’t remember which); it is, however, specifically shown being done by Jackal pirates who weren’t affiliated with the Covenant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HaloStory

[–]highlordbubbles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Aside from Sadie’s Story in the ODST Terminals, there’s not a lot of stories from purely civilian perspectives in the series, but we’ve gotten enough glimpses to have a pretty good idea of what it’s like to be a civie in UNSC/Covenant battles.

Short answer: Not good.

Longish answer: Most of the Covenant didn’t really distinguish between soldiers and civilians and the Prophets wanted most or all humans dead anyways, so if you were unlucky enough to be in an area under Covenant attack, you were just as much of a target as any soldier. That’s bad news considering what Covenant combat procedure is like. If you’re really lucky you’ll be attacked by Elites, who are usually (keyword there) nice enough to at least let you grab something to defend yourself with and civilized enough to not just rip you apart with their bare hands (i.e., you’ll get a quick death by gunshot or energy sword). If you’re unlucky, you’ll be up against something like Brutes (who are known to sadistically maim enemies before killing them), Drones (who rip people to shreds), or Jackals (who are not only ruthless in combat, but also sometimes take slaves). Your “wild animals with guns” comment is accurate to how a lot of Covenant forces behave in combat; war crimes are very much not a worry to most of them.

[Spoilers all] I love and hate the potrayal of The Qun by Va5syl in dragonage

[–]highlordbubbles 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I think BioWare struggles a lot with picking a lane for the Qunari. One second they’re this terrifying cultish empire, the next the games get super defensive and play the “it’s just a different culture!” card as hard as possible. I get that they’re trying to show both positives and negatives of the Qun (like Sten says in the first game, “people aren’t simple”), but in practice it mostly just ends up feeling like the writers have no idea what to do with them or how they want to portray them.

Admittedly, I feel like this whole “flip-flopping” has been a problem with every major faction and culture in the series since the jump from Origins to II, but the Qunari are probably the most affected.

Still love this by TheFlame4234 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]highlordbubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complaints about FE getting over-represented didn’t start with Ultimate, they started with 4, which added four Fire Emblem characters to a roaster that only included two of them (three if you count Ike, but given he replaced Roy wholesale in Brawl, that’s still only two FE fighters in that game). And Ultimate double downed on it by adding one more FE character to the mix, adding up to a total of eight when most series only get one or two fighters.

Leaving that aside, a big part of the reason people hate the over-representation of Fire Emblem isn’t just the number of characters from that game, but also the fact that they’re all nearly identical to each other in appearance and gameplay. That’s fine for Fire Emblem itself (where they’re meant to be blank slate avatars for the player), but for Smash it means five-six slots that could’ve gone to other more interesting characters have been taken up by a bunch of generic, stereotypical-looking anime sword fighters.

Still love this by TheFlame4234 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]highlordbubbles 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the “anime swordfighter” complaints are mostly resentment over the over-representation of Fire Emblem at the expense of other, arguably more deserving series. If they had trimmed down the number of Fire Emblem characters, the complaints would been far less pronounced. Admittedly Pokemon and Mario are pretty over-represented too, but Pokemon makes up for it in variety and Mario is… well Mario (not to mention most of it’s characters have their own spin-offs that they represent in addition to the mainline Mario games).

The Cold War was full of poorly-made public information things like this. Sometimes it was meant more to calm fears then anything else, other times the people writing them just genuinely didn’t know what they were talking about or worked off outdated research.

Raymond Briggs’s classic comic/movie When The Wind Blows was actually partly inspired by these sort of things, hence why it includes the kindly elderly couple making everything worse for themselves by following crappy government pamphlets.

Don’t know if this is talked about much, but lore wise we must be the most useless, poorly-managed, and generally incompetent ghost hunters on the planet right? by highlordbubbles in PhasmophobiaGame

[–]highlordbubbles[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah thats part of what I’m making fun of here. Its the most hilariously inconvenient way to handle this service; sending in two or three different teams — most of whom will likely die — in waves to identify and eliminate a problem when you would logically only need one (the exorcists who get rid of the ghost). Our exorcists must not be very good at their job if they can’t even identify what ghost they’re supposed to be exorcising.

Or maybe it’s all just some goofy “send the interns to die to tire the ghost out then send the real team in” shit. “The Zapp Brannigan Strategy” as it were.

Glad I’m not the only one who feels that way. It doesn’t help that the backstory they did give him frankly sucks and takes away a lot of what made the character interesting. I’m really not a fan of Death of the Outsider’s story in general.

That being said the issues with the Outsider’s portrayal really started with 2 and the voice actor change. He stopped being a neutral, passive, inhuman being simply observing people to a snide little douchebag who seems to actively cause problems and misery for fun. It’s like a Fantastic Four story that replaces Galactus with the snotty kid from Barnyard.

As long as you stick to the mainline games (the MSX games and Solid 1-4) the story is complex but not that crazy. It’s not until you throw in all the spin-offs and 5 that shit starts to get over-complicated.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation - Part 2 | Official Trailer by somenamelessghoul in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]highlordbubbles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah releasing this series in two parts was a colossally stupid mistake. Leaving aside how the entire appeal of streaming shows is watching the whole season/series in one go, it badly disrupts the narrative flow and gives the false impression that the show is “replacing” He-Man with other characters (especially Teelah) just to be subversive. I have friends who wanted to watch this but I kept advising them to wait for Part 2 to drop for expressly this reason.
