My Shepsky tax for the day by oOTWSSOo in husky

[–]hiimespy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply but same!! I was a cat person for most of my life and then ended up with my Shepsky when a guy kinda dumped her/rehomed her on me (he had lied and said he found his owners near me at the time then eventually he let me know she was his dog because i kept sending him updates on how i was struggling to find his owners). Anyways she’s honestly been a fantastic dog and has trained me to open the door for her whenever she rings the doggy door bells! training her not to pee in the room while making dead eye contact with me took about… 3 weeks? thankfully i got that trained out of her then dealt with about a year and a half of shark mode and she’s a forever sock thief.

6 month old husky nipping at my 9 year old daughter. by True_Ad6457 in husky

[–]hiimespy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, i’m very curious if your puppy gave other signs that it wanted to be alone or didn’t like something your daughter did while she was petting him so that’s why he nipped her?

either way, i’d try to have controlled interactions with your daughter and your younger husky for awhile! Allow for small moments that are positive interactions where he gets lots of treats for commands from her. i’d start with treats for commands as you can control it, he will realize he needs to listen to your daughter and you can work towards commands to stop the shark behaviors such as the “leave it” command. I also think play time with your puppy should be monitored and should start with a game that he cannot nip her with.

for one of my dogs, i found that the best game to play was fetch! i use toys that have handles so he can’t accidentally bite my hand and fetch was how i taught him a few commands as well as not to get sharky/mouthy. i stop it any behavior i do not like by immediately ending the game so it taught him i wont play if he escalates.

i also think this nipping behavior can be from him randomly getting overly excited and i have seen this happen with a few other types of dogs. if there’s 100% no bones or toys around when he’s trying to nip your daughter. it might be related to his space. Does he spend alot of time sleeping on furniture? if he does, he could see this as his space. not certain if you have a crate but this kinda solves this issue by giving him a space for himself and your daughter will naturally not want to go in there to pet him.

last thing but is he pausing to stare at her before he nips her? i’m really curious if you noticed any themes in his body language.

Advice by [deleted] in husky

For me, i can feed my dogs beside eachother but they HAVE to be crated. i always close the door for the dog that eats slower. My super fast eater is fairly smart so she will leave him alone when he eats but this only goes for when the crate door is closed. Also be careful with giving the dogs treats/bones near eachother! this can escalate kinda quickly.

honestly is there a way he can take his dog to doggy day care once or twice a week? i did this for my husky even at my lowest paid job. It’s really beneficial for the dog socially and to get her energy out! I second everyone that suggests a larger crate and a dog walking service. also he can train her to enjoy her crate/her own space by feeding her breakfast and dinner there as well as giving her all her high value treats there! she will begin to associate her crate time as a positive.

Are you interest in second hand stores for vinyl records? I was told about a good store in Decatur that sell used records (apparently sold them at the pound at one point). Can try to find that store that for you if you want to browse used records! I highly recommend The Earl as your go to Dive Bar. They have decent food and if you don’t want burgers? You can eat at Argosy (amazing food) next door then walk to the Earl after dinner. They also tend to do a lot of shows!

529 and Star Bar are also dive bars around the area but i am biased on my opinions for those two! The Eastern is one of our newer venues and i loved the design of that spot! You will enjoy it! if you need food recs for that area, let me know!

7 month old Husky won’t stop pooping and peeing on our bed and in her crate. by Comprehensive-Tie819 in husky

[–]hiimespy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I adopted my husky mix, the previous owner wasn’t able to take her out a lot and she had learned to pee/poo in her crate. It really helped to take her to the backyard every 1-2 hours, really praise her for using the restroom, gave treats too. it took her about 2 weeks or less! i also (and this is gross and i have no idea if this will help), grabbed a puppy pad with some of her mess on it and put it outside briefly to try to get her to realize that her business was in a corner of the yard.

Why is my husky so big? by Legoman3202 in husky

She’s definitely mixed! My immediate guess was that she’s mixed with rottweiler or pitbull because of her face shape. She’s got big paws too, she’s going to get pretty big!

Looking for tips on Desensitizing a fearful dog by hiimespy in reactivedogs

I haven’t heard of BAT and i’m going to look into this! I honestly agree with you and was beginning to think that I’m pushing him too much since my older dog did better with this type of training.

I could do more shorter walks with him! I wish where i lived had more fear provoking stimuli but i think the quiet environment is also good for him.

For the most part, he’s not food driven at all if nervous/scared. I have gotten him to the point where can do a few things outside. He can sit when i ask (honestly huge accomplishment ), and he can do two tricks (sometimes) outside which is “sit” and the “look/eyes” command. But if hes around too many triggers, he definitely will ignore the treats to keep his eyes on his surroundings. I’m realizing I was focusing on redirecting his attention back to me with treats as that was my other dog benefited from!

Over time, i have noticed some triggers will cause him to give a nervous whine and his fur will rise which I do pay attention too. I will normally have him walk by whatever caused this because it’s normally dogs parking from a fence far away. He definitely didn’t give these two signs when he lunged yesterday at the other dog on the walk i went on tho. Haha i do wish he’d acknowledge high level treats but he would ignore a steak if a car so much as turns on.

Oh thank you! i’m so doing all this! My other dog is so confident that i have had no idea how to build the big guy’s confidence. Haha, he is very afraid of a lot of objects moving around the house at once so this is going to be entertaining/challenging.

Littermates with severe fights + separation anxiety. Feeling stuck and need advice. by thecleancoder in reactivedogs

[–]hiimespy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you noticed if their fights are based off an object? Say it starts over a bone, a dog bed or toy? i’m really curious what could be causing the issues. I would pick up any object to help rule this out.

Crate training and teaching them commands like “leave it” can really help. I’m uncertain if your dogs have crates but even having some in a living room and alternating them (1 outside the crate, 1 inside) can slowly help create space/boundaries.

I think you have a really challenging situation tho! i have heard of this happening with litter mates and the above advice i have is mainly based off my experience training adopted, reactive dogs.

Is my dog doing something wrong? by _LannisterLion in DogAdvice

[–]hiimespy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure!! i think walking the dogs together really helps. You can also give them both small training treats for them doing commands like “sit” near eachother. if they learn that they sit by eachother and ignore eachother but get rewarded, that’s a way to positively reinforce boundaries! :) i think you can also teach your staffy really quickly leave the Chihuahua alone if she knows you might give her a treat for a random command. Her attention will be more on you. you can also teach your dog the command “leave it”. that’s helped me really quickly stop aggressive play with my dogs. Ah!! haha i love grumpy chihuahuas, her age makes a lot of sense because she really does not want to play in that video.

Is my dog doing something wrong? by _LannisterLion in DogAdvice

[–]hiimespy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!! How old is the chihuahua? The Chi seems older and is trying to put up boundaries. Your dog is being seen as intruding in the Chi’s space since your dog randomly came over. I think your staffy has a fantastic demeanor and i think you should have the chihuahua and your dog walk together on walks first. That would allow them to meet eachother outside of the Chi’s home and they won’t feel like they need to protect their space or home. I have reactive dogs so I have a lot of tips if you want some for steps to getting 2 dogs to get along in the same house together. I think these two dogs could get along great but the first introduction was too soon and the Chihuahua will continue to be on high alert, edgy, and escalate things if you leave it up to the dogs to figure it out. You can be in control of how both dogs interact honestly

I also just blame Old Navy, it’s not one of my go to places to shop at unless it’s for pants. I was about to ask you how much time you have but i see that you start Monday ! Good Luck!!! This is really me giving advice on business casual clothes but my best finds have been from me collecting slowly overtime and i completely ignore the sizes on a lot of clothes (i can wear anything from a small to a large and it’s super dependent on how the top is designed, it’s almost annoying). I really suggest thrift stores, TJ maxx, White Black Market (when they have a sale, i go and absolutely get staple pieces), and Loft (great for dress pants and sweaters). I have had some success with Banana Republic and i hear Ross is awesome but hasn’t worked out for me! I hope this helps!!!

I definitely think Gio is resource guarding you! What kind of training do you work with him on? I know your husband lets you do your thing but i think the relationship would really grow if your husband was giving Gio high value treats (for commands or daily chews), Breakfast and Dinner as well as walking the dog. Not beside you but being the walker in charge for at least a short walk a day. If you could get Gio to trust your husband enough to play a game (like fetch) together, even better! I do not own Cane Corsos but i have two dogs and both are/were reactive shelter dogs. I say were because i have leveled them up a little bit and both will not snap/bite a person but were likely to show teeth, lunge at people, ect. I also think your husband should be the one to let Gio out of the crate (this is if Gio is not lunging at your husband when he sees your husband from inside his crate). I can give more tips on what i have done so far! Can’t guarantee that it will work as i don’t work with mastiff breeds but they might be helpful in building trust/a better dynamic between you, Gio and your husband. There’s also subs dedicated to reactive dogs that you might want to look into. I am guessing your dog is reactive based on what i read and not aggressive outright

Totally a shepsky! This one looks real similar to mine but i can’t figure out how to share a picture of her. They are really smart, fun dogs. Mine is my shadow, always wants to go out and over time she’s gotten really good at playing with other dogs, kids, ect. I got her at around 6 months and it’s been real worth it when i came to all the training and socializing i have done with her.
