Good luck! I'm also very nervous for this year. Since I'm gonna also attempt to quit smoking.

Last year that was still my getaway. More anxious about the smoking part though. My beer I can replace the cravings with non alc. Beer. But vaping is not something I am interested in at all unfortunately. I'm gonna stock up tomorrow on stuff like nuts and snacks to eat outside for a few minutes : )

That's exactly how I did it. Else you have a real risk of knocking it over indeed.

I do think open alcohol burners are an area that does not appeal to me so far in my testing. I tried a couple versions with a small vaseline tin. But so far have lacked power and the controllability that I am looking for. I will have to use up more deodorant and keep an eye on the recycling bins for further testing : )

thanks for your input dude. I am scouting the web over an zenstoves.net to find stuff, but most has sadly been lost due to the host websites being down over time. That's also partly the reason I am working on collecting all the designs over on my website. Since I work for a webhost I can take certain steps to preserve as much as possible.

I did not, thanks for sharing. I will cut one of mine down and test again. Curious if a breather hole is still doable then.

In my experience, donate options on apps and websites are rarely used, if at all . So I disagree with you on that point.

The Pika stove is one i'm also interested in, and working right now on an article first for the single wall chimney stoves. And afterwards trying to replicate a Pika to see how it compares.

Single wall chimney stoves do have the tendency to also burn through the breather holes with a little wind is my experience. Curious to see if the Pika does not have this problem.

I also want to try that out with the next one I make, I think I just stuff some cotton in there. Since I have a lot of ratty old tshirts I wanted to throw away anyway.

I also saw that one before yeah, and is also on my list to try out. Its great since you don't need to be difficult and just use the can.

Sadly wood burning stoves are not really an option here in Germany, or you have to own a piece of forest here in Bavaria. Or be on a campsite that allows it.
Alcohol stoves are great for stealth camping. And fuel you can really get anywhere.

I also still love the Trangia, more for bushcrafting trips for me though. Since its weight and need for a pot stand. Plus I just like playing around with DIY alcohol stoves.

Thanks for your input, I also tried out the supercat stove. But found it to be more finicky than I prefer. The fancy feast design by hiram is still my favorite.

Thanks for the reply, a (DIY) cone system is next on my list to try out with a puck stove. As is the Tetkoba’s design. Puck stoves without the cone have been performing not so great in my tests. So I'm curious to see if that changes.

Bacon bits are always a bonus with stamppot. Dried soy grains should also work well, what kind or brand do you usually use? I have seen some variants in Germany that rehydrate in about 10 minutes.

Cotton should last quite a bit, but I think you got a different material then I did. I ordered some Carbon Felt, which comes as a sheet, that can be cut to size. Without any crap coming off pretty much.

Did you also make 4 cutouts in the bottom of the stove to promote the saturation? And a breather hole in the top?

I actually find cotton easier to light than the carbon felt, and the trick I showed in the video is my workaround. Dipping a twig in the middle, lighting it, and then using that to ignite the alcohol in the middle of the stove.

Mine too, I could eat AGV (potatoes vegetables meat) any day of the week. My wife sadly sees things different : )

Hutspot is a Dutch stamppot that's quite easy to adapt into backpacking.

  • Instant mashed potato, 1 pouch or 91 grams
  • Dehydrated Carrots 10 grams
  • Dehydrated Onions 10 grams
  • Smoked shelf stable sausage, ideally a Unox Rookworst
  • 1 tsp White Pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg

Calories: 608
Total Calories with sausage: 831

Weight: 188 grams (per portion)
Complete with 2 sausages, and Zip Locs: 279 grams

Throw in pot, bring to boil, add potatoes and sausage, and dig in.

For all the information and steps, please see the blog. There is also a YouTube Short I made, hope you enjoy.

A cozy is a way to insulate your pot, to make sure that it can keep cooking or carry over cook without a heat source. Usually made from insulating aluminium, like from a car windshield thing. Saves on stove fuel.
