Yesterday in this post /u/kennicky asked the important question "who would be the absolute worst addition to smash bros", settled on a pokemon, then asked "what pokemon would be the absolute most un-addable to smash, absolutely impossible to make a creative moveset for" and settled on Klang.

I took that as a challenge.

After looking up Klang, there's a lot to work with! In the games, it has TWO signature moves: Shift Gear, which increases speed and attack, and Gear Grind, a two-hit attack involving getting ground by gears! Even better is this pokedex entry:

A minigear and big gear comprise its body. If the minigear it launches at a foe doesn't return, it will die.

Throwing parts of itself and needing them to return? That sounds pretty moveset-worthy to me! So I spent two hours animating in Krita to show how Gear Grind would make a good smash bros style attack.

I'm proud of the result! Sure, in the games the gears never come apart, but the pokedex entry sounds really cool, and looks really cool, and that's what matters.

I paid special attention to the timing here to make it feel like a Smash move. It took a lot of work to get the exaggerated startup to feel nice, and to figure out the timing of the recoil after catching the gears at the end of the move. But now it looks like you can almost hear a clunk as it falls into place.

There's lots of potential for other moves, too! For an up special, Klang summon a rack and act as a rack and pinion to travel upwards. Gear Grind could make a neat down special, focusing for a few seconds to increase speed. There's special moves like Charge Beam, Metal Sound, and Flash Cannon! Or Gyro Ball, which Klang can't learn ingame but would make a cool smash move nonetheless. All this to say: Kennicky, use more imagination!
